Everyone listens to music. Whether it be Katy Perry or AC/DC or anywhere in between. Today’s music industry has undergone an entire overturning from the studio aspect of musical production. Autotune allows artists and their producers to perfect the notes and pitches delivered by a singer. Autotune is not a hidden feature in modern pieces of music. Though, what does happen to be a rarity in today’s music is creativity and originality. Imagine going to a concert and the backing tracks failed to work. The artist can neither play their instruments nor actually sing. What is the purpose of being there? The most notable features of this song were the electronic modification on the vocals, not the talent of which she supposedly possessed. Not only does autotune affect the vocal aspect of music, but the instrumentals. Over 95% of music that is played on the radio uses autotune to a noticeable quantity. Statistically, this means that only 0-1 songs released on your favorite pop artist’s new album is their true talent. Imagine a music industry without the presence of auto-tune. Raw talent would emerge from the reserves, and music would be of respectable quality. When artists use autotune to fix a flat note here and there, the quality of their music is not necessarily damaged. Musicians are prone to human fault and mistakes. The problem begins when vocals start to obtain a robotic, digital sound, and artists cannot perform unless they are equipped with an autotune enabled microphone. Record labels systematically chose who they want to sign, and then promote them to the public. Therefore, they have an enormous influence on what music America and many other countries listen to. This is bad news because corporate promoters don't just go out looking for talent to sign to their label regardless of what kind of music it is attached to. Companies use statistics to determine what they think will sell, and sign whoever fits the right criteria. They don't bother looking for artists who aren't playing what's hot; they want bands playing the sound they know sells. Labels also want bands with catchy songs, and I don't know about you but I think catchy giggles are for advertisements. Auto-Tune is an audio program that fixes the pitch of a singer’s voice. A research scientist named Andy Hildebrand, who worked at Exxon Production Research and Landmark Graphics, first created Auto-Tune. Hildebrand there used seismic data exploration to search below the Earth's subsurface for oil. After a year, Hildebrand decided to study music composition, which is where his interest in improving music came from. Hildebrand figured out that he could use the same method to interpret seismic data in order to modify the pitch in audio files. This program became known as Auto-Tune, which was released in 1997. Today, critics such as Josh Tyrangiel call Auto-Tune “Photoshop for the human voice.”(Tyrangiel, n. page.). Even though Auto-Tune is now widely used by many artists, there are still ongoing debates about whether it detracts from or benefits popular music. Many people and artists believe that pop music benefits because it allows music to sound better, while others say that it makes it hard to differentiate between songs because they all sound the same.
