Everyone listens to music. Whether it be Katy Perry or AC/DC or anywhere in between. Today’s music industry has undergone an entire overturning from the studio aspect of musical production. Autotune allows artists and their producers to perfect the notes and pitches delivered by a singer. Autotune is not a hidden feature in modern pieces of music. Though, what does happen to be a rarity in today’s music is creativity and originality. Imagine going to a concert and the backing tracks failed to work. The artist can neither play their instruments nor actually sing. What is the purpose of being there? This ruins the emotional and natural quality of the music. Society’s first taste of autotune is accredited to Cher’s song, “Believe”, in 1998. The most notable features of this song were the electronic modification on the vocals, not the talent of which she supposedly possessed. Not only does autotune affect the vocal aspect of music, but the instrumentals. Over 95% of music that is played on the radio uses autotune to a noticeable quantity. Statistically, this means that only 0-1 songs released on your favorite pop artist’s new album is their true talent. Imagine a music industry without the presence of auto-tune. Raw talent would emerge from the reserves, and music would be of respectable quality. When artists use autotune to fix a flat note here and there, the quality of their music is not necessarily damaged. Musicians are prone to human fault and mistakes. The problem begins when vocals start to obtain a robotic, digital sound, and artists cannot perform unless they are equipped with an autotune enabled microphone. This is the case in many concerts of today, where autotune is the sole producer of good sounds from an artist. In genres like rap and pop, autotune is often so highly manipulated that it can be labeled as misuse of the voice editing
