Schizophrenia is a misunderstood illness in today’s society. Psychology in modules (2015) states schizophrenia means “‘split’ (schizo) ‘mind’ (phrenia)” (p. 640). Oftentimes, people confuse schizophrenia with dissociative identity disorder. Those with schizophrenia has a split from reality as those with dissociative identity disorder are split into multiple personalities. There is a stigma associated with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. This is why it is very important to be educated on the topic. According to the Journal of Mental Health, “…the term stigma from the Greeks who used it to represent bodily signs indicating something bad about the moral character of the bearer marked with the stigma” (p. 318).
Public stigma refers to a large group endorsing the stigma and stereotypes against the stigmatized group. Many times the public will associate undesirable characteristics in society to those with schizophrenia. Schizophrenics are often viewed as violent, incompetent, and crazy. Those who often have these views discriminate towards others. This public stigma can be harmful to those being stigmatized against and can possibly make the illness worse. In the original DSM (1952), there were many subtypes included with schizophrenia such as catatonic, paranoid, and chronic. With the new DSM, these subtypes were removed as patients met the critic for several which could become confusing to the clinicians and diagnostic hierarchy. According to Reddy, Hogan, and Green (2014), “…DSM-5 requires that one of the two required types of symptoms must include delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech. That is, a person cannot receive the diagnosis with only disorganized behavior and negative symptoms” (p.
