Throughout history, public hysteria has been conducted and exploited as a means to obtain power and control. People often fall prey to public hysteria and all that it entails. Oftentimes it’s something that starts off as a little white lie and spirals out of proportion. Moreover, public hysteria is used to turn citizens against one another and push them into the hands of a new leader; one they often feel can protect and restore society. Public hysteria fogs judgement and cultivates suspicion in the minds of many. What makes public hysteria attainable is how easily it can be embellished and distorted. For instance, in “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller it states, “I want to open myself! . . . I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!.” This is a prime example of the manipulation of words and the seriousness of the allegations made. Today one would have the ability to identify the deceit behind those words, but due to the use of spectral evidence in the time of the Salem Witch Trials it was taken seriously. They are seen as perjurers who are going against the nation. To speak out is to put their lives in jeopardy, but to remain quiet could be risking destruction of the country. Paul Robeson, an All-American football player who had a law degree from Columbia had to testify because he refused to sign an affidavit stating how he was not a Communist. He stood up for his rights as an American citizen and he was sent to court because his ideals contradicted theirs.
