Theme Essay Throughout the play, The Crucible, a theme portrayed was fear and suspicion can ruin a society. As Abigail had to find a way to get the blame off of her in the beginning of the story she created fear and suspicion in the town. When others began to believe witchcraft in Salem could be true, suspicion began to run wild. Mrs. Putman put it into a good perspective when she stated, “... there are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires!” (Miller 17). This tells us as readers that everyone is becoming suspicious of each other, and nobody knows who they can really trust. When Mrs. Putman is talking about fires she means everyone is creating plots on each other based on their previous encounters with each others. Any evidence or even suspicion that you don't live in the puritan ways could get you convinced of being a witch at this point in the trials. Elizabeth tells us how she feels by saying, “She frightened all my strength away” (Miller 27). Elizabeth is talking about Mary Warren and how she now has more power over elizabeth then elizabeth has over mary. This is idiotic because mary is the putnams servant. Elizabeth fears abby is going to force mary to turn her into the courts. These same situations are happening all over Salem. The fear and suspicion continues to rise as more and more women continue to get accused with being a witch. At the end of act two abby makes a better allie for herself by naming names of other women in Salem that were supposedly witches. Abby stated this by saying, “I want to open myself!
