Going to college for free sounds appealing to many people, especially students. However, once the research is done, there are many more cons than pros. “Free” college does not simply mean the cost of tuition disappears, but the cost will transfer to someone else, most likely being the government and the taxpayers, resulting in many unhappy people. Free public college hurts the economy because there would be many agitated taxpayers, overcrowded universities, no egalitarian gains, and a variety of other issues. Although attending college at no cost might seem like a great idea at first, there is technically no such thing as free college. The current high school generation is very scholarship-driven and will go above and beyond to earn as much money as possible to put towards a college education. Not only does financing a college education teach students how to budget money and save for the future, it also encourages them to enroll in rigorous courses, maintain a high grade point average, and get involved in extracurricular activities such as clubs and community involvement. It would diminish the worry and stress over financing college (Covert 1). It would also grant everybody the opportunity to go to college. Those who are pro free college also argue private colleges would lower their costs to compete with public schools (Covert 1). However, a college education is one of the most valuable things a student could have, so why should it be free? Paying for a college education is like investing in the future. One cannot make earnings in the stock market without first contributing some of their own money. Therefore, students should not be entitled to the benefits of a college education without paying the price. Paying for college also teaches students a valuable lesson.
