True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Life in America in the 1800s was that children as young as 6 or 8 years old might have worked in the mill or factory. Many kids in the rough part of the country might have worked on farms along with the grownups. The work day started before the sun came out. Girls spent most of their day cooking and milking goats or cows. They also helped there elderly family members. Life as a sailor in the 1800s were very hard on calm days there was almost nothing to eat. And when it would rain there were harsh winds and heavy rain.
