Is the World Coming to an End? What is Artificial Intelligence? Is it something that’s taking over the world? Or is it something that will help further advance what we know about the world? Is it ethical? Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is a branch of computer science that creates intelligent machines that attempt to mimic humans to help further technology and improve everyday life. AI has been around since 1956 when Dartmouth had a conference to research how computers can think like us. It turned out to be a lot more difficult than previously thought. This was the birth of Artificial Intelligence. From here, many companies and people have been working on the development …show more content…

One is that it can help businesses automate work to grow and expand. Another is that AI helps you in your everyday life. For example, if you have a smartphone such as an iPhone, you’ll notice that it is a personal companion in that you can talk to it and it will provide feedback based on what you say. If you ask it what the weather is outside, it will tell you. It can also keep track of events and things coming up in your life. In the more professional world in fields such as law and medicine, AI development is used to solve complex issues and problems that it would take a single person too long to complete. In other words, AI optimizes a better as well as a faster solution to a problem. An example of this comes from an article I read by Tom Smith. A company can use artificial intelligence to quickly organize large amounts of information based on customer feedback to improve relations and ultimately benefitting the company by not only increasing margins, but also lowering the amount of errors created by humans (Smith). Nowadays, this is crucial for large companies because they need to mitigate problems on a large scale since everything and everyone is connected …show more content…

They both agree that AI could either be the best thing that ever happens to us or it could be the worst. Hawking for one, believes that it could end mankind. In an interview with BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones, he said “It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate,” referring to AI, “Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.” (Cellan-Jones) Hawking is right about this because if we make technology that can think for itself, it would be hard to limit what it could possibly do. Movies such as Terminator illustrate how the takeover would happen with its “Skynet”. This is a prime example even though it seems quite unrealistic because it finds out how capable of destruction it is and that its creators want to shut it down. This is when it turns against mankind. AI would achieve this if it is developed in a way to think for itself and can create emotion. On a much more sooner timeline, AI is starting to take jobs away from people. McDonalds for example is creating machines to take orders, eliminating the need for front-end workers. Destroying jobs like this will leave people jobless and potentially homeless. This is detrimental to society because people will accept these changes. There is talk that machines like this and robots need to be taxed like a worker does. This
