Problems In Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow

In America, one of the biggest problems that the country faces is a high incarceration rate. In The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander addressed this issue and explains, “Convictions for drug offenses are the single most important cause of the explosion in incarceration rates in the United States” (Alexander, 59). While the incarceration rate alone is a large problem, Alexander discusses many other issues that come along with this problem of a high incarceration rate due to drug offenses. One main issue that Alexander addresses is the fact that “Although the majority of illegal drug users and dealers nationwide are white, three-fourths of all people imprisoned for drug offenses have been black or Latino” (Alexander, 98). There are many of flaws within the system that give advantages to certain groups of people and disadvantages to other groups, such as African Americans. While I believe it is wrong that cops are allowed to discriminate against certain groups of people, I do not believe that the law will ever be able to prevent this from happening. What I do believe the law can do is to take these minor offenses and put the people in programs rather than arresting them and ruining their record. Programs for people caught with drugs would be a smarter and more efficient way for going about the people caught with drugs. A policy can be put in place that would require any person found with drugs on them to be required to attend a program for a certain amount of time until they no longer have to. If they are caught a second time or refuse treatment, then I believe arresting the person can be the way to go about handling the situation. It would be unrealistic to legalize drugs, but educating the people using and selling drugs could solve most of the problems that result from arresting these
