Claim: When it comes to personal privacy, I believe that license plate scanners should only be lawful for official police activities. In the article “Private License Plate Scanners Amassing Vast Databases Open to Highest Bidders” RT a media platform funded by the Russian government, argues that it’s the Wild West in terms of how companies can collect, process, and sell this data. Conversely, the publication “In These Times’, a progressive activism journal out of Chicago, argues in their article “Who Has the Right to Track You?” that legislation would create a safe haven for certain criminals. This article uses ethos, pathos, and logos in an attempt to achieve its goals. For example, the author of the phrases “questionable data management” and “trespassing” to influence the readers feelings. This technique is especially powerful to someone who fears their safety and their information being spread. In addition, the author also made style choices to appeal to the reader. In paragraph 2 the author uses statistics and says that businesses can earn $200-$400 for a single vehicle’s license plate. The use of statistics catches the reader's attention. Working together, the rhetorical devices, the style, and the word choice create a negative tone for in the hopes that the article will persuade readers against license plate
