Recommended: Studies on prison systems

The prison system in the United States has long been a topic of debate. Many people view prison as a dark blot on the character of our nation. However, many people view it as a justifiable, necessary evil that maintains the safety of the productive citizens of our society. As prisons are being filled to capacity, these two camps continue to argue whether more prisons should be built, or if the judicial system should relax the sentences upon lesser criminals. These two points, though valid, do nothing to remedy the real situation our nation faces, in dealing with an ever increasing prison population. While the number of people incarcerated has continued to rise, it has done little to curb the actual crime rate in America. This will continue

    When envisioning a prison, one often conceptualizes a grisly scene of hardened rapists and murderers wandering aimlessly down the darkened halls of Alcatraz, as opposed to a pleasant facility catering to the needs of troubled souls. Prisons have long been a source of punishment for inmates in America and the debate continues as to whether or not an overhaul of the US prison system should occur. Such an overhaul would readjust the focuses of prison to rehabilitation and incarceration of inmates instead of the current focuses of punishment and incarceration. Altering the goal of the entire state and federal prison system for the purpose of rehabilitation is an unrealistic objective, however. Rehabilitation should not be the main purpose of prison because there are outlying factors that negatively affect the success of rehabilitation programs and such programs would be too costly for prisons currently struggling to accommodate additional inmate needs.

The reason for this increase in population is because of the sentencing policies that put a lot of men and women in prison for an unjust amount of time. These agencies choose to fight crime by establishing a “War On Drugs” and with “Get Tough” sentencing policies. These policies include “three strikes laws, mandatory minimum sentences, and juvenile waives laws which allows kids to be trialed as adults.

Mass incarceration seems to be extremely expensive and a waste of money. It is believed to be a massive failure. Violent crime rates fell by more than fifty percent between 1991 and 2013, while property crime declined by forty-six percent, according to FBI statistics. While jailing may have at first had a positive result on the crime rate, it has reached a point of being less and less worth all the effort. The entire judicial system as well as CDCR needs to be revamped. Sentencing laws need to be changed and CDCR needs to change their entire approach to rehabilitating inmates.

Depression, claustrophobia, hallucinations, problems with impulse control, and/or an impaired ability to think, concentrate, or remember are experienced by prisoners who are isolated for a protracted amount of time; research has indicated that prisons can cause amenorrhea, aggressive behaviour, impaired vision and hearing, weakening of the immune system, and premature menopause. With the lack of system programs, the constant violence, and the social isolation, the prison system fails to prepare prisoners for reintegration to society.
