Priests allow for people to do a lot in their life with God helping us along the way. The authority to forgive was first given to the Apostles from Jesus and is passed to the priests. Priests allow for Jesus to be on Earth through being embodied within them when we are Confessing our sins. Other people around us do not have the authority to forgive sins and while they have the Holy Spirit and Jesus are within them, without the authority priests have. They are the way to connect to God in human form on Earth. Reconciliation with a priest is necessary because he allows people to be forgiven by God through them. The authority to forgive was passed on from Jesus because he knew that he was going to die and needed to be able to forgive future generations too. Priests are the embodiment of Christ on Earth, therefore they have the authority to forgive sins, “But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:10). People might think that praying to God or speaking to another person will allow them to have their sins forgiven, but it will not because we need to speak to a priest. Asking for forgiveness from another person allows us to come closer to God, but you need to still see a priest because you are not fulling forgiven, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (John 1:7-9). People’s pride gets in the way of forgiveness, they think their relationship with the priest will be different in a bad way afterwards.
