Similarly to Pride and Prejudice, A Doll’s House contains the theme of unreliable appearances. Initially in both pieces, the main characters appear in a way that does not represent who they actually are. However, as the plot progresses characters evolve and display their true self. In Pride and Prejudice, initially Mr.Darcy seems to be arrogant, condescending, and proud. On the contrary, as the novel progresses readers discover that he is actually caring and accepting. In A Doll’s House, Nora seems to be extremely happy and deeply in love with her husband. She seems to enjoy being called names like “sweet little skylark,” “little squirrel,” and “little featherhead.” She seems to depend on her husband for money and enjoys being submissive in …show more content…

She broke the law in order to save her husband’s wealth as well as borrow money so that they could move to Italy where he would have an easier recovery. Nora was willing to sacrifice so much for someone that she realized she did not share true love with. Her courage to walk away and stop being apart of a life that made her like a “doll” is admirable. As for Torvald, he starts off the play as an extremely protective, powerful, and selfish husband. He enjoys thinking that he is Nora’s hero, that Nora admires him for the amount of money he makes and the “intelligence” he possesses, and above all, he is madly in love with Nora. However, as the plot starts to unfold, Nora starts to take over the role that Torvald seemed to have. When Torvald becomes aware of how Nora borrowed money, he immediately worries more about his reputation than her. As he starts to realize that no one will ever find out about what Nora did, he forgives her and starts treating her as if she was his little puppy.
