As our food, diet, and lifestyle changes, many of us do not know the long term effects of what is happening internally in our bodies. Over time, if we do not treat our bodies with nutrients, our bodies can turn on cancerous genes, or genetically modify what we currently have. Mutating our own genes with bad habits, can cause a negative chain effect on our bodies. Prenatal genetic testing is a great tool to use while pregnant. It will allow expecting mothers to see if the fetus as well as themselves are healthy. While many expecting mothers do not know all the tests offered, genetic counselors will increase their knowledge on potential problems that may occur.
The use of prenatal genetic tests (PGT) are a relatively new approach to knowing the outcome of a pregnancy. Those who are not in favor of PGT’s believe that these tests can promote abortion, and that it is morally wrong. Supporters of PGT’s argue that tests are necessary to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery. When an individual confirms pregnancy, they should meet with a genetic counselor. “23 and Me” is an at home DNA test that shows genetic health risks, and carrier statuses. This test just requires a simple saliva sample. Individuals get a saliva kit sent to their door steps, mail it back to lab professionals. This is a simple, and pain free test that is offered to everyone around the world. “23 and Me” tests for diseases such as celiac, breast cancer, and Tay-Sachs disease. The detailed report can be found online once results are finalized. Once parents get results back, they can do research on their own to find out more about each disease.
