Why is prejudice still being taught? Why do people only care about themselves? In the two passages, The Hangman and The Greene people are being mistreated. The common theme is prejudice which the authors develop through actions, characters, and setting. Moreover, the authors use the actions of the characters to develop the theme of prejudice. In paragraph five of The Greene it states, “ And he always says that no Greenies will ever move into his neighborhood.” in paragraph 28 of The Hangman he states “For who has served me more faithfully?” The quotes suggest that the character in The Greene does not want green haired people to move into his neighborhood.. 12 Angry Men is about 12 men who are the jury for an 18 year old accused of murder. The judge states in the opening scene that it is a premeditated murder in the 1st degree, if found guilty will automatically receive the death penalty. The 18 year old male is accused of killing his father with a “one of a kind” switch blade, in their home. The prosecutors have several eye witness testimonies, and all of the evidence that they could need to convict the 18 year old male. In the movie it takes place on the hottest day of the year in New York City. There are 12 jurors whom are to decide if the evidence is enough to convict the teen of murder in the first degree. In the first initial vote it is 11-1. The only way that the jurors could turn in their votes was if there was unanimous vote either guilty or not guilty among the 12 jurors. As the movie progressed the jurors ended up changing their minds as new evidence was brought to their attention by simple facts that were overlooked by the police and prosecutors in the initial investigation. Tempers were raised, and words flew, there was prejudice and laziness of a few of the jurors that affected the amount of time it took to go over all of the eye witness testimonies and evidence. The eye witness testimonies ended up being proven wrong and some of the evidence was thrown out because it was put there under false pretense.
These examples illustrated the general idea of discrimination due to the isolation of characters. Some were discriminated against because they were different and didn’t fit in with the other people at the ranch. Once we finished the story, I thought that it was just a story about two men’s lives but after deeper thought, I realize that there is much more to it. There are problems occurring in the story that still happen today and the story does a great job in showing us that. The author of the story may be trying to tell the readers that discrimination was a big problem back then, and is still a big problem today. In cases nowadays, some people are discriminated against and judged because of small characteristics that a person may have. People get discriminated against all the time about these things and the author may be telling us that we should think twice about discriminating against
Prejudice is a preconceived feeling or opinion that is not based on reason or actual experienced. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee one of the main themes was prejudice. Prejudice is based on ignorance and that is shown in the novel. Many characters were unwilling to understand others which displayed their ignorance. Harper Lee explored different types of prejudice throughout the novel with character interaction. She used different characters in the novel to express and expose prejudice. The prejudice in the town did not only effect one group of people it harmed the whole town. There were three main types of prejudice in the novel. There was racism, sexism, and classism.
Prejudice is like a poison, it infects everything it touches. It can drive a white man and a black man to hate each other because their skins are different colours. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, the town of Maycomb is plagued with prejudice against Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. The evidence in the text shows and implies how this prejudice dominates the thoughts of Maycomb’s citizens.
Ever wonder why the play “Twelve Angry Men” is such a good classic. You can see this throughout the book, because the story is about a first person perspective with a boy named Daniel, and his experience of the Nazis taking over Germany and killing millions of Jews. One big part of the book portrays giant amounts of killing, specifically in the crematorium in Auschwitz where “[Daniel sees] corpses of every size turning black from heat. And [he realizes] that people [he knows are] in there, that they were not just bodies but each one a human being” (93).
