Ronald Reagan once told America, “Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, but there must be no mention of the man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a student asked why it was called Christmas.” I agree that this is what's wrong with our country. Prayer and religion should be allowed in our schools. Religious worship should be allowed in our government and schools because it is preserved by the First Amendment, was allowed by the Supreme Court, and was exercised by the Continental Congress. The Continental Congress was the group of people who formed the Articles of Confederation. This was the first attempt for the colonies to break away from Britain and become a separate country. Many people who attended would become Founding Fathers. During the Second Continental Congress meetings they prayed frequently and used many religious symbols. During a disagreement between states over slavery George Washington told the men to go and pray. The problem was then promptly solved. The Congress also had Rev. Jacob Duchè start the meeting with a prayer. Ben Franklin once said at a meeting of the Second Continental Congress,” Where as true religion and good morals are the only solid foundations of public liberty and happiness… it is hereby earnest recommended to the several states to take the most effectual measures for the encouragement thereof.” This quote from Franklin shows how influential religion and prayer was to the founding fathers, and to the creation of the country. Without the influences of religion and prayer Franklin agreeable notes that the country would have been founded on bad morals and without the foundations of liberty and happiness.
