Ronald Reagan once told America, “Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, but there must be no mention of the man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a student asked why it was called Christmas.” I agree that this is what's wrong with our country. Prayer and religion should be allowed in our schools. Religious worship should be allowed in our government and schools because it is preserved by the First Amendment, was allowed by the Supreme Court, and was exercised by the Continental Congress. The Continental Congress was the group of people who formed the Articles of Confederation. This was the first attempt for the colonies to break away from Britain and become a separate country. Many people who attended would become Founding Fathers. During the Second Continental Congress meetings they prayed frequently and used many religious symbols. During a disagreement between states over slavery George Washington told the men to go and pray. The problem was then promptly solved. The Congress also had Rev. Jacob Duchè start the meeting with a prayer. Ben Franklin once said at a meeting of the Second Continental Congress,” Where as true religion and good morals are the only solid foundations of public liberty and happiness… it is hereby earnest recommended to the several states to take the most effectual measures for the encouragement thereof.” This quote from Franklin shows how influential religion and prayer was to the founding fathers, and to the creation of the country. Without the influences of religion and prayer Franklin agreeable notes that the country would have been founded on bad morals and without the foundations of liberty and happiness. The First Amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”. There are several ways to apply this to the issue of prayer in school. Arguments can be made for both groups of people who are for and against prayer in school. What does it all boil down to? Freedom of religion still applies, just do not organize or endorse it in our schools.
Praying in school was first addressed in the Supreme Court in 1962 in the Engle v. Vitale case. The Establishment Clause inserted and stated Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. The court ruled the Union Free School District in Hyde Park, NY had violated the First Amendment by directing the principals to cause the following prayer to be said aloud by each class in the presence of a teacher at the beginning of each school day: “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our Country” (Longley, "Public"). I agree with the court ruling because not all students in a classroom share the same beliefs. To cause everyone to say this prayer surely violates their rights.

Adams was not alone as a Christian man in the early years of our country. Therefore, the Christian philosophy of education must include so much more. The Bible must be used as the basis for the education of children. A child should be taught in a way that will best benefit the individual that God created. He should be trained in his own way, the way he learns best. In order to do that, teachers must be able to assess their students in a manner that will reveal the learning styles that best fit each child. No man should have to be subject to anything that he does not believe in.
