Peer Gynt is widely known across European nations. Peer Gynt is a dramatic poem that was written by Henrik Ibsen in 1867. The poem was mostly adapted on Norwegian fairy tales. Henrik Ibsen portrayed the poem in a Norwegian style. This style emphasized the orchestral music for the play, that was also written by Henrik Ibsen. Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright, Theatre director, and poet. The script of the play portrays social banter and pragmatic scenes with surreal scenes. Peer Gynt is a very complex play to comprehend. The story talks about how a young Peer, whom failed to secure his marriage to a girl named Ingrid, daughter of a rich farmer who could have solved Peer’s financial problem. He’s very disloyal and disobedient. He lies to her, and never accomplishes anything she asks of him. In the play, she states “Don’t you blush before your mother? First, you skulk among the mountains month long in the busiest season, stalking reindeer in the snows; a home you come then, torn and tattered, gun a missing, likewise game; and at last, with open eyes, think to get me to believe all the wildest hunters’-lies! Well, where did you find the buck, then?” In this line, Ase lectures Peer and knows that his intentions and mind is very lazy and careless. She also mentions how he’s very unreliable and hasty. In addition, “PEER: Darling, pretty little mother, you are right in every word; don’t be cross, be happy ASE: Silence”, Peer went off and used her kindness by trying to persuade her to be happy and to forgive his actions. Henrik Ibsen writing style was inspired by his family and his childhood experiences. Ibsen’s style was considered modern. Like most writers, Ibsen related most of his written work to his life. They were considered as parts of his early life and maintaining a job and wealth. The stories may have related to some struggles with himself and disagreements with his family. On the other hand, Edvard Greig associated his musical style with mostly with Norwegian folk music. This is because of his ethnicity, Greig was a Scottish native in Sweden during the period of Norway imperialism. His musical style is more intensely melody and structure. He wrote music in an unusual way, that helped push the musical harmonic inventions, that dominated classical music to a better level.
