The formal definition of power is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the courses of events. So what are the elements that constitute real power? Many believe true power revolves around force, deception, manipulation, and coercion, but others believe this is not the correct way to maintain power. The real way to obtain real power and have a true influence in others requires empathy, generosity, and social intelligence. Firstly, the characteristic of acquiring empathy for others, when in power, is very important. Empathic accuracy (EA) has an impact on social behavior and the result of interpersonal interactions. It has always been taught that sharing is caring, but people in power seem to have difficulties maintaining this moral code, which demonstrates the phenomenon referred as the power paradox. The power paradox is an observation in which people gain power and the capacity for influence through social practices that advance the interest of others, but as soon as the gain power their practices disappear, and they become narcissistic. Generosity is a vital factor in rising in power and receiving respect from others. According to Datcher Keltner, Co-Director of the Greater Good Science Center, states, “Competitive altruism refers to how people rise in power through acts of generosity. Relevant studies find that as people share more, they actually rise in the esteem of others and enjoy elevated power.” In other words, it is shown in studies how generosity affects power and the way you can influence other solely based on the fact of sharing. There are many things that people with the authority can give to others to allow the rise in the esteem, such as resources. An example of this can be found at the location of those who live in small hunter-gatherer societies. The power and status goes to the one who shares the most, which can include from food to labor or care and protection. The most important factor that constitutes real power is understanding and advancing the goals of other group members. The one who has the ability to compromise, negotiate, and to solve group tensions is the person who will acquire real power, because they are showing they know social intelligence through their actions. The article, The Power Paradox, shows the need for social intelligence when it clearly states, “Because of our ultrasociability. We accomplish most tasks related to survival and reproduction socially, from caring for our children to producing food and shelter. We give power to those who can best serve the interests of the group.” This explains how social intelligence is important because most of the tasks we accomplish are related to society, and by making compromises and giving power to those who can be trusted, it can serve the best for the group as a whole. Therefore, creating an environment where real power is found. Aggressiveness is never the way to try to obtain power, for it does not create trust worthy relationships. Others will soon realize they are mesmerized in self-interest, and that they will soon harm the group. Datcher Keltner, later on in his article The Power Paradox, mentions cooperation and modesty are not only just ways to use power, but are also useful skills for people want seek to maintain their position of power.
