The effects of colonialism, whether positive or negative, are subjective wherever colonialism was practiced. Colonialism, a practice of one country exploiting another country for economic gain or for population expansion, affects both the colonizers and the colonized. There are times where the colonizers have profited and the colonized have suffered while there are times where neither the colonizers nor the colonized have profited. Because this is so, any benefits or losses occurring because of colonialism negate each other.
The negation between ‘benefits’ and ‘losses’ are seen in how colonizers and the colonized view colonialism. For the most part, colonizing countries deem colonialism as a positive good. The colonial power gets a new country to populate, free labor, and a new facet to add to their economy while they bring long awaited civilization to the savages. However the colonized country views colonialism as a negative bad. The colonial power controls their country, demands free labor and cheap exports, and implement heavy taxes while the colonized are slaves to the colonial power. With almost every country and island colonized or having once been a colonial power, there are many documented effects of colonialism. An example of colonialism where there were ‘positive’ effects for the colonial power and ‘negative’ effects for the colonized is the United States of America. The effects of this colonization clash depending on whoever you ask. Some say the effects are the creation a world power and a safe haven for everyone around the world who wishes to find a new home. Others say the effects are the creation a country full of racists and somewhere they’ll never be equal. The colonized, otherwise known as Native-Americans, say the effects were the destruction of their home, people, and culture.
