The problem Popper was trying to solve was that of demarcation and the meaning of science. Popper said the demarcation problem was the one of fundamental problems in the philosophy of science. It is important to distinguish between what is science and what is bullshit in any area of knowledge. To better deal with the differences, Popper formulated falsification, which was a substitute to the logical positivists’ verification principle and became a principle for differentiating between science and pseudoscience. The first section of this paper will cover the principle of falsification and its use in solving the problem of demarcation and induction. The second section will have some critiques of the principle.
The demarcation problem is the philosophical issue trying to determine what hypotheses should be considered scientific and what types should be considered pseudoscientific or non-scientific. Popper rejected verifiability as a way to completely verify a scientific statement.
