No matter if it’s broad or abroad, humans are facing challenges that require serious attention. We see those problems being covered in the newspaper article very often. Whether it is human cruelty, sexual violence, poverty, or any other global, economic, and social issue, most of these problems are acknowledged but aren’t taken initiative towards solving them for the majority of people. However, there are still many figures representing leadership, responsibility, and humanity that hold the potential of contributing to the upbringing of global peace; with Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, being one of them. Pope Francis is able to see the public’s struggle and he acts upon it, striving to be a guiding figure. Pope Francis notes,” Don’t expect a recipe from this pope,” saying that the solution to global peace is something that the general society has to find themselves. Pope’s consistency towards a goal that concerns billions of people is what brings a social and economic reform. Recently Pope Francis has visited Latin America including Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay to pursue his goal. As he visits each country, he has addressed about the problems that concern the crowd the most and motivated hundreds of thousands people to stand up for what is right. Besides that he had chance to get close with elderly to embrace them. This shows that Pope is an ordinary person like the rest of us, not just a public figure and people have more trust on a leader who is on the same level as them. For the reason, they believe that he is trying to expand the Catholic Church. However, there are little to no downside of expanding Catholic Church. It is one of the largest charity organizations in the world; they feed, shelter and educate along with providing a spiritual support for majority of people who are in need. In the U.S itself, Catholic Charities USA, has more than 2,500 local agencies that serve close 10 million people annually according to Georgetown University study research and there are thousands more Catholic Charities around the globe. Another reason is that the large companies who are being harmed from his intentions to better the world; they lose millions if they were to restrict the emission gas or try to go green. This class has taught me a lot about the Franciscan Values. The core Franciscan values are community, compassion, peacemaking, and reverence for creation. Other values of Francis were the humility of God, mystery of God as generous love, and the integration of God, humanity, and cosmos (The Life & Spirit of Francis). St. Francis believed that God was the meaning behind his entire life. Although Pope Francis will be imperative in the future, someone who has already paved the way and inspired change in history is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. realized the “power and privilege [African Americans had] access to and [could] exercise, as well as situations in which we have less power and privilege.” (Kirk and Ozakawa-Ray, Page 8). Dr. King took the “far-fetched” idea of racial equality and made it a reality through a means of peaceful protest that inspired the American Government to stop treating minorities like second-class citizens. Francis was famous for his love of all creation. He called for simplicity of life, poverty, and humility before God. He worked to care for the poor. Thousands were drawn to his sincerity, piety, and joy. In all his actions, Francis sought to follow fully and literally the way of life demonstrated by Christ in the Gospels. He died in 1226, at the age of 44.
Saint Francis of Assisi had a simple message to all in his time and in ours; live a life of humble simplicity in service to others to the glory of God. He came from a background of wealth and privilege yet put it behind him for the privilege of serving God and all His creation. To Francis everything sang out in praise to God; every person, plant, and bird to which he compelled us to be good stewards of the earth and its resources. He conveyed the truth of God’s love for us and all of creation and led by his example of service.
