Many students tend to dread attending classes. As a result, the attitude of students is at times very relaxed when completing assignments. Teachers can assess whether students complete assignments through a variety of ways. But the most effective way is by assigning a pop quiz. Pop quizzes are most effective for a variety of reasons. For one, it is a fair assessment. Every student is instructed to study and acquire an understanding of all the material. A student that takes advantage of his or her time will often succeed on the quiz. However, those that spend less time will most likely fail. This promotes one to stay on task and focus when given new material. But more importantly, every student is given an equal opportunity to make sure he or she is well prepared. …show more content…
Because most teachers assign tests two weeks after the material is give, students will never quite know if they truly have grasped the information. So, by giving pop quizzes, students can gage where he or she is at in terms of understanding the material. If he or she does well, then the student can focus on the weaker areas. And if a student did poorly on the quiz, then they know that more time should be spent towards learning the information. By having a quiz, a student can correct his or her mistakes now before they fail a major test or exam. Pop quizzes are a great motivator for students. For example, a student is performing very low in a certain class. Then a teacher assigns a pop quiz. And after a pop quiz, the student finds out he did well on the test. He or she will be quite proud of the result and will then be motivated to continue learning and studying. This motivation for studying will lead to better results on major exams. The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. Today about one in five school children ages six through 19 have obesity. Not having recess in middle school is causing a lot less physical activity and that is causing a higher rate of obesity in America.

Summative assessments are a mirror to student thinking. Summative assessments help teachers and students see a trajectory of their learning. Teachers can use them to identify which students are ready for other tasks; and which students need more time to develop specific concepts. The assessment that we administered asked students to answer a series of questions using information from a graph. It also prompted them to create a graph using the results of survey for our field trip. This assessment combined constructed response questions with a meaningful task. “The paper and pencil multiple choice test is not the only way to assess learning. It is a limited way to gain insight into what some students know and are able to do”(Berliner, 2010, p.113).

Giving students the ability to learn things outside of their school environment such as taking them to field trips, gives them the ability of hands on learning and visual learning. It also gets them out of the school environment and into a more open broad background. Subject curriculum will be based on daily articles, students background knowledge and teacher activities; learning the subject without reading numerous chapters from a textbook. I use assessments to assist me to identify and to develop their learning process. Assessment is not about the final grade, but the learning experience. I would rather have my students know how to look up information and apply knowledge than to memorize it and forget it ten minutes after the test. Learning is a life-long adventure and I want my students to know how to adjust and cope during their adventure. I want my students to have the skills for researching and finding the answer. It is not always that answer which demonstrates learning; it is in the process in which you find the answer that demonstrates learning.
