Throughout my career as a police officer, I have been a witness to the injustice and mistreatment of individuals within the legal system as well as within the organization which I worked for over twenty-five years. Upon retiring from law enforcement, I have had the opportunities to create positive social changes and uphold my social responsibility through becoming an active member of retired police officers. One of our primary goals in creating positive social changes enabling social responsibilities to the community is establishing a fair and just recruiting and hiring process for prospective candidates to become police officers. My family and I decided that we could make a positive social change within the community by collecting recyclable beer and soda cans and donating the cans to a non-profit organization. In turn, the non-profit organization takes the cans to the recycle center and exchanges the cans for cash. The non-profit organization uses the money to purchase books and educational materials to enhance the lives’ of under-privileged children within the community. Since 1999, the non-profit organization organizes a yearly event where donations are solicited from local businesses and individuals for a yearly fundraiser. The yearly fundraiser is held in a public park for families and individuals alike to attend and participate. The park enlists entry fees to make necessary improvements and continuous maintenance of the park. The fundraiser is a three day event which includes over-night gatherings, entertainment, and food free of cost, however, donations are acknowledged to assist the organization’s cause. One the event has concluded, any food left is donated to a local homeless shelter and all monies are donated to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The money donated are used to treat children with orthopedic conditions, sports injuries, arthritic and neurological disorders, including learning disorders.
