The Historical Interaction Between the Europeans and Indians in the Disney Movie Pocahontas Over the past couple of weeks, we have been studying the story of the Native American (Indian) princess, Pocahontas. We have studied both literature and the 1995 Disney movie. I am going to write about what methods are used to portray the relationship between these two civilisations. Both media portray the same relationship between the civilisations; this is one of mistrust, misunderstanding and dislike. From the moment the Europeans landed in "the new world", the natives were not sure of what to think of them, they looked different, sounded different and carried themselves differently.

Understanding what occurred and how did it occur are difficult to get while many different versions are. During the manner of collecting solid information, she confirms that although the fact could see in many other ways, the content of fact remains the same. As an individual, reading Tompkins’ provided examples of bias give me an insight into the power of social ethos that rules our real opinions and beliefs. As a student, reading Tompkins’ method of comparing and contrasting another response teach me that learning the facts without evaluating other perspectives can never give one a full description of the event. Pocahontas was an influential Indian who shaped Jamestown. Pocahontas’ real name was Matoaka. She was the daughter of Wahunsenaca or chief Powhatan. Pocahontas was a Powhatan Indian and at the time the Powhatan tribe was strong. It was Pocahontas who helped save a colonist named John Smith from being clubbed to death. Because Pocahontas had saved John Smith she built trust between the colonists and the Powhatans. Pocahontas became an important figure for the peace and negotiation during this time period. She had helped the Indians from not fighting the colonists and vice versa. As an immediate result of her saving John Smith the Indians and the new colonists worked together and were beneficial to each other. In the future Indian and Colonists began to fight again. For centuries, women have acted as men’s hypothetical stepping stones. Their work has been pushed to the back and overlooked; even if they were the ones to accomplish immense breakthroughs or life-altering discoveries. In “Pocahontas to Her English Husband, John Rolfe.”, Paula Gunn Allen argues that this is exactly what happened to Pocahontas. Not only did she helped the settlers by introducing them to the land and showing them how to grow tobacco, she also saved John Smith and his crew's lives. Disney’s intentions were more than to captivate young children. They were ultimately to retell the original story of Pocahontas and the settlers and to address social issues of lifestyle and acceptance depending on race and the way they are being treated, proving that marriage isn’t all that important and addressing familial gender roles in society based on having a mother figure. Sojourner Truth for instance was a wonderful person with a courageous mind and strong ambition. She had a major impact on the US today concerning color barriers and challenged justice wherever she thought it should be challenged. During my exchange to the US I learned a lot about this woman and was really amazed by what she achieved. To me she is the real example for a strong-minded person who was able to change everything around her without changing herself for others.
