“So long as there is imperialism in the world, a permanent peace is impossible”(Hassan Nasrallah). In Pocahontas, created by Disney, Pocahontas, the main character, meets John smith which is part of a group of men that have arrived on her home in Virginia. These men want to take over her home because they believe there is gold and believe the Natives are “Savages”, but conquering the Natives home isn’t possible when Pocahontas and John Smith fall in love. When John Smith is about to be executed, Pocahontas comes to the rescue and saves John Smith which stop both sides from causing a war. I believe the movie doesn’t portray that actual event very well because many events in movie are historically inaccurate.
Imperialism is when a nation takes over another nation to increases its own political or economic power, even if it hurts many people. The countries that were involved in conquering Africa between 1880 and 1910 were France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, and Spain. They all wanted to conquer Africa because of many reasons. They all wanted to gain power and importance but also thought that they were superior to Africans and could help them become modernized . Natural resources were rich in Africa and was another reason for imperialism. Natural resources would help better the economy by manufacturing goods. Other European nations were trying to conquer Africa as well, so nations would try to get the land first, creating competition between them. Religion and empowerment also were reason for imperialism. Religion motivated imperialism because missionaries pushed for expansion and empowerment was a reason because people wanted to know about the unknown and adventures that occurred in other places.

The film also got the rescue wrong. Pocahontas didn’t really save John Smith but it was some sort of ritual done by Powhatan to maybe show the power he had towards the English (Archibald Andrews Marks). Historians believed that Powhatan adoptes John Smith to have peace with the Europeans (A. Bowdoin Van Riper). This also makes Pocahontas his sister supporting the idea that a romance never did exist.
In the movie, nature played a big part and shows Pocahontas as someone that believes in nature-spiritual beliefs but in reality it wasn’t like this. She didn’t believe in those beliefs even though she was a Native. That is why later on in her life she converts to Christian. I believe that the movie was just being stereotypical because that is what we picture when we picture Native Americans, even if that’s not at all how they are like.
