Why were plebeians so important to Rome? The ancient Roman society consisted of two main classes, the patricians and plebeians. Although the partition were the decedents of the founders of the Rome and holding the most power and wealth, the plebeians were the real base of the roman society and without them the roman civilization were not able to survive. The plebeians who were citizens of Rome did not have almost any civil or political rights in early roman republic or even before that at the time of kingship. From about 50 BCE to the year 200 CE, the Roman Empire was a powerful nation. Rome was the city that became the center of the Roman Empire and by 200 BCE Rome became a powerhouse. The Romans conquered Scotland to Spain, controlled the Mediterranean Sea, and established colonies in North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Minor. By the year 44 BCE Julius Caesar became a Roman Emperor and Rome had a great military. Then around the 5th century CE the Roman Empire began to weaken. However, when speaking of a good emperor in the Roman Empire, one must also realize that goodness must also relate to how that emperor made the empire better. The five so-called good emperors were Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. How were they good? Trajan was the best emperor because he was able to have not only a great relationship with the Roman Senate and people, but also because he was able to make the empire greater, whereas the other emperors were only moderately good because they accomplished only one of the above qualities.
Patricians were the richer people in the world at the time and owned a considerably large amounts of lands. Since they had large amounts of land, which allowed them to gain power, they were deemed patricians, They were the ones who governed the city from the Senate. The Senate was the empire’s governing body during the republic and were voted into office annually by a large group of citizens and also the equites, or men who had property. Equites were people lower in ranking under the patricians (Ancient Roman Politics, Crystalinks). All the social and political power was mostly in the hands of ancient families who are: the Cornelii family, the family of the Caesars, and the Aemilii. The Senate’s power and all other things were lost under the emperors, but the patrician families still held public opinion. Ancient Rome did have a royal/ upper class, they were called patricians. Most patricians were wealthy landowners from old families. Boys born in a patrician family would get an extensive education along with a private tutor. To rich Romans education was a big deal, wealthy children would most likely get a private tutor. General schools were only for boys. The poor people in ancient Rome did not receive a formal education. However many still learned how to read and write.
