In recent months, Planned Parenthood has been under fire for “selling fetal tissue” and being mainly an abortion clinic, which is threatening their government funding. Though many of the fetuses are donated to research and require expenses for preservation, they are not breaking any law. “It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any human fetal tissue for valuable consideration if the transfer affects interstate commerce” (42 USCA. Sec. 289g-2.). Above that even, only “3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services are abortions” (“Services”). Planned Parenthood is not just an abortion clinic. They are a women’s health care center. The government funding they receive is only allowed to be used for …show more content…
"'I'm so thankful for Planned Parenthood not only because they have pills and various ways of protection...but also because they have people and counselors that you can talk to whenever you're confused or worried. They also point out ALL the possible solutions.' stated patient Paula" ("Patient Testimonials"). For many people like Planned Parenthood is primary to women's health. Most patients at Planned Parenthood fall below the poverty line, so with government funding they are able to provide care to an estimated 5 million Americans each year ("Services"). This funding allows so many people to acquire heath care that they would not get …show more content…
They have gone so far as to release a propaganda video to defame Planned Parenthood and coerce conservative minded and religious citizens into voting against funding. The only problem with the video, which was very emotional, is its actual origins. The video was from a documentary and within the documentary a 19 week-old fetus was featured, only the fetus was not actually a fetus. "It was the stillborn child of Alexis Fretz, whose son was stillborn in 2013. Fretz took the photo and posted it on the Internet to memorialize the son she named Walter" (Fitzpatrick). Presidential candidate Carly Fiorina even mentioned the video in the Republican debate in September. Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is very vocal about his opposition of Planned Parenthood. He recently pushed to defund the only two Planned Parenthood centers in Louisiana despite them not doing abortions due to the dud video. The Supreme Court blocked his actions due to the around 5,000 people that would be losing health care. "Republican-led House of Representatives has formed a special committee to investigate Planned Parenthood" (Condon). By focusing so much on the abortions, the conservative party has created mass hysteria among anti-abortion groups and citizens. Protests have become violent and security
There is a common misconception that Planned Parenthood is a center for abortions, and that is it. The truth is, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services relate to abortions. Planned Parenthood receives $500 million in federal funding and it is illegal to spend any of that money on abortion services. In CNN ’s article, "Planned Parenthood, by the Numbers”, there are clear statistics about how Planned Parenthood manages the money they receive and how a majority of their work focuses on
Planned Parenthood is non-profit and has been around for over fifty years. Planned Parenthood offers many services to women, other than abortions. A few of the services offered to women are free health care, such as anemia testing, cholesterol screening, physical exams for employees and for sports, flu vaccinations, aid in quitting smoking, high blood pressure testing, tetanus vaccinations, and thyroid screening. The many other services they offer include free birth control, emergency contraception, testing for STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), breast cancer screenings, cervical cancer screenings, pelvic exams, free information to women, and a number of other things.(“General Health”) Under the Hyde amendment that passed in 1976, there has been a legislative provision prohibiting the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion unless the pregnancy arises from incest, rape, or to save the life of the mother. During the fiscal year that ended in June 2014, Planned Parenthood affiliates around the country received $528.4 million in government funds. It has been estimated that 42 percent of their services went towards STD/STI testing and treatment, 34 percent went to contraceptive, 11 percent to women's health services, 9 percent to cancer screenings and prevention, 3 percent to abortion, and 1 percent to other services. Noting that one thing is clear and that Planned Parenthood top priority is not the wellbeing of women. Behind this organization there are facts that they don’t want Americans to know which shows a whole different view of Planned Parenthood, like how there is a high abortion rate which the tax dollars generate and goes to the clinics revenue and also that this is a criminal organization. Conservatives argue that selling unborn baby parts for profit is a crime and can result is imprisonment. But the conservatives see that there should be a stop to funding Planned Parenthood, so now Congress has the chance to end government financing for Planned Parenthood. A voice of
When you read this dialogue do you know what abortion is? If you are like me then you are definitely confused! Like how do you even put yourself in this situation? Will an Abortion Affect me being able to have a child in the future?
President- elect, Donald Trump, and Vice President- elect, Mike Pence, have stated their views on Planned Parenthood and how it should be defunded; especially Vice President elect, Mike Pence, who has a history of trying to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2007, Mike Pence introduced a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, and kept pushing for it until it passed in 2011. "If Planned Parenthood wants to be involved in providing counseling services and HIV testing, they ought not be in the business of providing abortions," Pence told Sarah Kliff in 2011. "As long as they aspire to do that, I’ll be after them." So after this troubling statements and bills, I decided to set the record straight. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit reproductive health care organization. It’s services provide STD testing, pregnancy prevention, contraception, counseling, cancer and HIV tests, and abortions. Planned Parenthood is a well rounded health care organization for men and women. They use their resources to help you not the other way around. Planned Parenthood is a program designed to help all human beings. Planned Parenthood shouldn’t be defunded; instead it should be keep being available to all human beings visiting or living in the
(The Economist). Trump also sends people who are pro-life as well to announce the plans of what trump plans to do. Trump sends the first vice president who was the governor of Indiana named Mike Pence to deliver a message to the crowd. Mike tells the crowd “that the new administration was intent on ending tax-payer funding of abortions and those who provide them.” (The Economist). He also discussed “that Mr. Trump would the following week announce a Supreme Court nominee—to fill the space left by Antonin Scalia, a conservative justice who died last February— “who will uphold the God-given liberty enshrined in our constitution”. Mike also says that “Life is winning again in America!” (The Economist). It turns out that Trump didn’t just pick Mr. Pence for his cabinet, he picked another person that was pro-life as well and his name was Tom Price. Mr. Price who is a pro-lifer and the leader of the department of health, has chosen to be a part of banning abortion nationwide of twenty weeks of pregnancy. Most people who were marching is hoping for “Roe” to be revoked as a law. A man named “Steve Hemler”, a former oil executive-turned “Catholic apologist” from Culpeper, Virginia said that “It
The Texas anti-abortion law has taken the country’s attention by storm. It is an issue on many different women’s minds, especially those who live in the state of Texas. The new laws are forcing many women to have to cross state lines in order to receive an abortion and medical care. This includes women who need abortions due to preexisting medical conditions and those who are carrying fetuses which are diseased and are expected not to be born as healthy babies. Texas Governor Rick Perry and Senator Ted Cruz are leading the fight for the abortion laws to become permanent, laws that are considered the strictest abortion laws that this country has ever seen.
Abortion is a one of the most controversial issues in this country, and those who aren’t in favor, or pro-life, think that is morally wrong, and because of that reason they believe that the government should no longer fund Planned Parenthood. Those who oppose Planned Parenthood argue that their tax dollars are paying for these abortions by the organization by the government funding them and they claim that isn’t right. Another reason would be that abortion is the main service they profit from and focus on, and because of that they should be defunded. Others argue that even though funding does not directly go to abortion services provided by Planned Parenthood, that it frees up money from other services to be directed to abortions (Rovner). There has been progress for these groups, for they have lobbied state and national government, which has, lead some legislators to propose legislation that reduces or expelling funding in certain states. Amongst these states that have been affected are Tennessee, Indiana, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Texas, Kansas, and North Carolina (Keen). The state most affected was Texas, as Planned Parenthood was defunded completely, and 47 billion dollars were cut the organization (Keyes). Many groups also have pulled funding from Planned Parenthood, as a result of the controversy with the controversy of their abortion services. Many seem to believe that
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that receives federal as well as state government funding. As per Lori Robertson’s article on factcheck.org, she states that “Planned parenthood’s 2008-2009 annual report states that it received $363.2 million in” Government grants”(Lori Robertson) As per government representative Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and a member of the Republican Party he believes that the grants that the federal government have been providing PPFA have been mainly used on abortion service and not on health services. While being “In a senate floor speech on Aug.3, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who cosponsored a failed bill to fund Planned Parenthood, also said that “abortion account for 94 percent of Planned parenthood’s pregnancy services”” (D’Angelo Gore). The organization also have antiabortion groups who also wants the funding to be cut. One of the allegation that Monica Miller a rally organizer made against PPFA is that “ The kind of sexual ethic that Planned Parenthood promotes is sex for recreation, sec for mere pleasure”(Monica Miller). Meanwhile, we also have the religious groups that beli...
In separate studies, Fuentes (2016) and Gerdts (2016) found that when clinics closed due to their inability to prescribe to the requirements of HB2, they left the individuals who would have used those abortion clinics without access to abortion providers. This in turn meant if women decided that they would pursue an abortion in a different city or out of state they had increased costs, due to travel and overnight hotel stays (Fuentes 2016; Gerdts 2016). In a review conducted by Rachel Gold and Kinsey Hasstedt, they also found that the negative attitudes and behaviors directed at those who provide abortions were spreading beyond that onto those seeking contraceptives such as the birth control pill (Gold and Hasstedt 2016). Gold and Hasstedt state that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission found that “.after Texas booted Planned Parenthood centers from its network of safety-net family planning providers, Medicaid claims declined for some methods of contraception, including long-acting reversible contraceptives and injectables” (as cited in Gold and Hasstedt 2016). Thus, the animosity toward Planned Parenthood as an abortion provider affects an individual’s ability to access birth control overall, not just abortions.
Planned Parenthood had challenged the laws in all three states and was said to be gratified by the decisions. “We are pleased with these rulings because they protect women’s health from being sacrificed to a dishonest campaign to demonize a safe and medically necessary procedure.” Planned Parenthood continued," And we are reminded again, as all Americans should be, of the importance of a fair-minded and independent federal judiciary.”
Some states cut funding for planned parenthood clinics. Although they don’t provide abortions they refer them to other clinics that could help them go through the abortion. If the state doesn’t allow abortion, they provide the patient with other precautions that could possibly help them. They provide the mother with prenatal care and adoption services. Some states provide grants for abortions. In Ohio they provide the grants, to any group that “performs or promotes”abortion. Legalized abortion is the only law that protects women in some states, due to the fact that if they were raped and got pregnant. Even though abortion is legal in most states it requires many requirements to get one done some of those requirements are attending counseling, waiting periods, doctor and hospital requirements, gestational limits, parental involvement, “partial-birth” abortions, public funding, private insurance coverage and ultrasounds. Some states require the women to attend counseling before coming through with the abortion, after the counseling sessions many women decide not to come through with the abortion. There 's different opinions on when abortion should be legal and when it shouldn’t. Many people agree that abortion should be legal when a women gets raped, but others agree that the women should have the baby and just place him/her in adoption centers. Many states require the women to at least 24 hours
There already has been the constant struggle for abortion procedures across the nation. Many women become pregnant unplanned and are in need of an abortion and Planned Parenthood covers it. According to the BMC Health Services Research, “Access to abortion care in the United States (US) is limited by the availability of abortion providers—the number of providers, their geographic distribution, and their willingness to accept insurance” (BMC 1). Even though it’s limited in the states Planned Parenthood still covers it for those who need it. If the repeal and replace of Obamacare continued, women will not be able to get an abortion at all in the
In 1971 Linda Coffee and Sarah Wellington sued on Norma McCorvey behalf, arguing that the state of Texas abortion law was unconstitutional. Defending the state of Texas was Henry Wade, district attorney of Dallas. The state of Texas only allowed abortions in cases where the mother’s life was at risk or the women was sexually assaulted. After two years of hearing evidence, the US Supreme Court affirms legality, a women’s right to abort, and that a right to privacy being implied by the Ninth and Fourteenth amendments in a 7-2 decision in 1973. It had encompassed a woman’s decision whether or not to stop her pregnancy. No states could restrict abortion during first three months or trimester of a pregnancy.
Abortions have always been a very controversial topic. Over the years we continue to fight for or against it. One can say that is one of the most talked and argued topic in the United States. An abortion is when a woman terminates her pregnancy before the fetus is viable using various of methods. Some argue that abortions should be illegal and considered murder, while others, from a religious point of view, say that no one has the right to take away the life of a person, in this case the fetus. However, others insist, that abortions are a basic women’s right.
