In recent months, Planned Parenthood has been under fire for “selling fetal tissue” and being mainly an abortion clinic, which is threatening their government funding. Though many of the fetuses are donated to research and require expenses for preservation, they are not breaking any law. “It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any human fetal tissue for valuable consideration if the transfer affects interstate commerce” (42 USCA. Sec. 289g-2.). Above that even, only “3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services are abortions” (“Services”). Planned Parenthood is not just an abortion clinic. They are a women’s health care center. They have gone so far as to release a propaganda video to defame Planned Parenthood and coerce conservative minded and religious citizens into voting against funding. The only problem with the video, which was very emotional, is its actual origins. The video was from a documentary and within the documentary a 19 week-old fetus was featured, only the fetus was not actually a fetus. "It was the stillborn child of Alexis Fretz, whose son was stillborn in 2013. Fretz took the photo and posted it on the Internet to memorialize the son she named Walter" (Fitzpatrick). Presidential candidate Carly Fiorina even mentioned the video in the Republican debate in September. Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is very vocal about his opposition of Planned Parenthood. He recently pushed to defund the only two Planned Parenthood centers in Louisiana despite them not doing abortions due to the dud video. The Supreme Court blocked his actions due to the around 5,000 people that would be losing health care. "Republican-led House of Representatives has formed a special committee to investigate Planned Parenthood" (Condon). By focusing so much on the abortions, the conservative party has created mass hysteria among anti-abortion groups and citizens. Protests have become violent and security
