For Example, you stay up all night and work hard on a homework assignment and your dorm mate just copies your assignment and gets a good grade or, you have good work with good ideas and somebody includes your writings and ideas in there paper without giving you any credit. A lot of students these days are very guilty of plagiarism. Students get confused about what is plagiarism and in this paper I will explain what Plagiarism is, the history on plagiarism, why we shouldn’t do it and the consequences of plagiarism. What Is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is anything that you take from somebody else that is not yours and using it as your own work without giving proper credit. Plagiarism is considered stealing but is not considered the same as copyright. Stanford sees “plagiarism as the use, without giving reasonable and appropriate credit to or acknowledging the author or source, of another person's original work, whether such work is made up of code, formulas, ideas, language, research, strategies, writing or other form." (Wikipedia) it is not okay to copy something from a website, out of a newspaper, book, journal or any other printed source. It is not okay to copy something word for word that is the obvious way of plagiarism. No matter how long it is, whether it’s a phrase or sentence. According to buzzle the word 'plagiarism' is actually derived from the Latin word plagiarius, which means kidnapping or abducting. Plagiarism is very serious in the classroom now days. It is very important as a college student to understand what it is and what not... ... middle of paper ... ... can really effect there learning and maybe could never do something they wanted to do because of one time doing the wrong thing. It is always very important to make sure we do not plagiarize. Conclusion I have learned a very big lesson with writing this paper. I now have a good understanding on what plagiarism is and what not to do. I now understand what is okay and what is not okay. I understand the rules in quoting and citing papers. At the end of the day we all know plagiarism is very wrong but some do not intend on doing it on purpose. Some students aren’t taught exactly what to do when writing papers and using other sources. To save time effort and also your grade it is recommended to never plagiarize. Give credit to every source you use even if it’s a just a little sentence or a couple of words. The credit due is what matters the most. Big lesson learned.
