"A phobia is an irrational fear, a kind of anxiety disorder in which the individual has a relentless dread of a situation, living creature, place, or thing (Nordqvist)." Arachnophobia, Acrophobia, and Coulrophobia these are phobias. Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders, acrophobia is the fear of heights, and coulrophobia is the fear of clowns, but why do people have them (Phobias list)? Phobias are not just simple fears they extend from and affect various parts of the brain. Phobias are irrational, involuntary fears that are caused by various reasons that affect many different people.
Phobias are quite common. They affect over 50 million people in the United States. As a matter of fact, about 19 million Americans have a simple phobia, about 15 million people have a social anxiety disorder and about 1.8 million have agoraphobia (fear of places that might cause panic, helplessness or embarrassment) (Nordqvist) (Agoraphobia). Most of these people know their fear is irrational, but despite that fact the cannot control their fear. Phobias produce fear or anxiety in a situation while fear is a strong discomfort that doesn't hinder everyday activities. People with phobias may go out of their way to avoid whatever causes them the fear or anxiety (Classifying Anxiety). Anxiety/panic attacks are common with people who have phobias. These attacks can cause physical symptoms such as trembling, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat and many other physical symptoms (Phobias – Symptoms). Don't brush someone off when they are having a panic attack and help them out. Some might not understand and brush the attacks off like they are nothing, but make sure whoever is having the attack is calmed down and feeling better because these symptoms are "not in their head" but actual
