Imagine you are a fourteen year old girl. You’ve just gotten out of school and now you’re walking home to a house you know is filled with men you don’t know. They pay your parents to use you for anything they want to. You’re fourteen, yet you’re a prostitute. This may seem like something only seen in the movies, or something you’d see in third world countries, but sexual slavery hits closer to home than you might think. An average of 17,500 people in the US alone are victims of human trafficking every year. However, there are questions that arise; isn’t slavery illegal? There’s a bigger question that needs to be asked, what can we do to stop it?
So, what is human trafficking? Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery, humans forced into sexual exploitation or harsh labor. Sex trafficking involves the buying and selling of people for the use of others looking for sexual services. It is a multi-billion dollar criminal industry, bringing in over $32 billion globally. The thousands of people in these trades are predominantly female who enter the trade around the age of 12-14. Most are runaways, orphans, but some are sold into the trade by their own parents. For many years the patterns have shown that people that have run away, have been abandoned, or were sexually abused as a child are the ones who most commonly go into the commercial sex trade. One solution that can help many of these girls is very simple, make shelters available to them. Using public government funding or fundraising, build or fix up homes and use them as shelters for these girls. Provide counseling for the survivors and anyone else that needs it.
