Greetings President Wilson, I hope this message finds you in the best of spirit and health. I wanted to update you on a few issues concerning the student body. 1.) HBCU Collation Case A very popular social media news outlet, 'TheShadeRoom' released an article around 12am regarding the pending HBCU Coalition Case. According to the article, "A federal judge recently ordered Maryland to invest more money in the state's historically black colleges and universities. As a result, U.S District Judge Catherine C. Blake ruled in their [Maryland HBCU] favor. She ordered Maryland to create a new set of unique and high-demand programs at each historically black institutions." Students are concerned about the factuality of this social media post / article. Our SGA President and Vice President have alerted members of the student body that this article may not contain accurate information. Nevertheless, students are awaiting an official update regarding the HBCU Collation Case. The President of Bowie State University, Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, has issued a statement to students that I have attached below for your review. …show more content…

This protest was not organized by any members of SGA. The organizers of the protest passed out documents outlining their demands. I will provide you with a copy of that document once it is made available to me. A meeting has been scheduled with Dr. Banks tomorrow at 10am to address the concerns voiced during the protest.     The Supreme Court resolved the issue of uncertainty in Grove City vs Bell, by determining that Title IX only applied to the particular departments receiving federal financial assistance, and not to the entire intuition (U.S Department of Education,2000). The ruling was based on the fact that Title IX did not distinguish between direct institutional assistance and aid received by the school through its students. Although few athletic departments receiving federal funds directly, this ruling made it possible for almost every university’s athletic program to fall short of compiling with the laws of Title IX. Cohen v. Brown University is the most significant hard fought case involving the first prong of Title IX “proportionality”. Brown University eliminated two men’s teams (water polo, golf) and two women’s teams (gymnastics, volleyball) from the universities donor funded varsity status (Stevens, 2004). Female students sued Brown University claiming that the University had violated their rights under Title IX by eliminating these two sports. The plaintiffs also argued that Brown did not make a sufficient reduction in men’s sports or add another women’s team to compensate before eliminating the two women’s programs.
