Persuasive Speech

“We only have 100 years left before Doomsday - and we need to get off the earth long before that comes to pass.” Renowned Physicist Stephen Hawking made this statement in May of 2017, and he is backed by Tesla and SpaceX founder and CEO, Elon Musk. With climate change, epidemics, overdue volcanic eruptions and asteroid strikes, and not to mention human overpopulation, we need to find a new planet. Joseph Cooper, the protagonist of the film, is a former NASA pilot who runs a farm with his children and father-in-law; is now told he needs to leave his family behind and go through space in order to find a new planet habitable for the human race in order to ensure a future for mankind. “Mankind was born on Earth ... it was never meant to die here.” Cooper truly believes that Earth cannot be the final resting place for the human race, that by using the technology NASA created he and the rest of his crew will find a new planet for the next generation of humankind. His mission fails; but after being sent into a space where Cooper can interact with his daughter's life, he relays the solution to the gravitational equation. “Do not go gentle into that good night / Old age should burn and rave at close of day; / Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” This is a portion of the speech Dr. Brand gave at the beginning of the film, do not give into the end that easily, fight against what you don’t believe in, fight against the end of all days. When Cooper is ejected from the room he awakes in a space habitat for humans orbiting the planet Saturn. In the year 2805 seven hundred years later, the last WALL-E on earth still spends its days on end cleaning up the trash left over by billions of products. Another robot called EVE is designed to assess Earth and see if there is any vegetation or that it is habitable; after receiving a plant from WALL-E, EVE returns back to the mothership with all the humans who had abandoned Earth all those years ago. The plant is delivered to the captain of the ship who is absolutely overjoyed with the fact that Earth can once more be habitable, the ship however is not as pleased. The ship attempts to destroy the plant resulting in the captain stating “Out there is our home, home auto! And it’s in trouble. I can’t just sit here and do nothing, that’s all I’ve ever done! That’s all anyone in this blasted ship has ever done, nothing!” Auto replies to this by saying that if you stay on the ship, you will survive, to which the captain states “I don’t want to survive! I want to live!” The ship has sustained the human species for seven hundred years and done any necessity for them, but now that Earth can grow vegetation and produce life, it is time to go home; and with the help of the ship, humans can once more make the planet beautiful.
