Last night, Elon Musk unveiled plans in a speech given in Mexico City to start sending humans to Mars, thus making us an “multiplanetary species” by 2024.
I understand that this is a big deal for many, but I mean really? Is this what we are turning to in today’s world where we are experiencing refugee crises, wars on unprecedented levels and scandals in the highest offices in the land?
Let me start off by focusing on the financial implications of Musk’s venture. $200,000, according to Musk, would be enough for one interplanetary space ticket. $200,000 that could be used for anything else under the sun, least of all to take oneself to Mars and colonize the planet. According to him, the advancements for us as a species would be “huge” and would allow us to develop further.

Would the common man rather buy a house or fly to Mars?
There is perhaps no better way to showcase the not straightforward way in which those in the 21st century thinking than this. Who has that money? Not the ordinary citizen, that I can assure you. And do we really need to venture into space when there are so many issues we have on this planet that we need to fix?
But let me humor you: let’s focus on the positives and try to believe that what Musk has done is lifechanging and a positive step for humanity.
The first benefit is one of the main reasons Musk wants us to go over to mars- to prove that interplanetary travel is possible and would therefore mark the beginning of extraterrestrial life for humans. Advancement of the same efforts made to take us to Mars could take humans further deeper into the solar system. Some achievement this would be, even though this is highly
On a cold September day of 2010, in Colorado, one of the coldest places in the U.S, 2 year old Gore Ottsen had fallen into icy cold water during a family trip to the Rocky Mountains. While his Mother was bathing his two baby siblings, Gore had slipped out through the back door. When his Mother had frantically realized he was no where in her sight, she immediately assembled a family search party to locate him. After 20 minutes passed by, Gore's Uncle Dave spotted Gore's body trapped under a log in a strong current irrigation ditch 350ft from the cabin. He was rushed to the closest hospital, where the doctor tried to resuscitate the child, but after being submerged for 25 minutes under water, the Ottsen family was told Gore had less than 1 percent change of surviving. The toddlers heart had stopped beating leaving the family devastated. However after almost an hour of having a non-beating heart,
For some reason, NASA is just perfectly fine with watching men and women die right in front of them on their own computer screens. The man has been stuck up on Mars for 687 sols. That is 708 days in earth terms. Yes, he is the first person on to not only live, but survive on Mars for 708 days. That gives his hometown some huge publicity and major fame. All of this could have been avoided though. Mark could not gotten severely hurt during the mission. Mark could not have died multiple times while living on Mars. He could have not had to travel with one rover and all the way to the MAV. He could have not lived on limited water, while almost killing himself trying to create more water, while trying to maintain
In going along with this plan, there will be more demand for scientists and engineers alike. Engineers will build the manned bases and vessels, while scientists occupy them and gather data to benefit the world. In this way, NASA will be able to see if it is possible to make Mars the next “Earth”, making plans to help make that a reality if this does happen. “Through space exploration and innovative thinking, NASA has injected science and inspiration into our culture and projected us into the future” (Haberle).

Welcome to America. Land of the free, home of the brave. A place they call the “land of opportunity”. Or more famously touted as the “American Dream”. It seems like by just hearing these phrases all you have to do is journey to America to make your dreams come true. That life will be easier by just being in America. Like America is the ice cream man with his truck that plays that all too familiar jingle. As soon as you hear it, like a child you are out of your house pining for his attention so that he may stop and give you the cool, sweet refreshment that everyone loves. Yet, forgetting that in order to get the sweet treat you need to pay. Because, no matter how friendly, nice, or inviting he is. He still needs to work, he still needs to keep his lights on, he has mouths to feed. That ice cream is not free. There is no free lunch.
...egular people, believing that if someone was to go to Mars they might have been able to survive A variety of organic compounds present may mean a life is probable. Also, if the trip to Mars in 2023 turns out to be a positive one, then it will prove to everyone that in the future more and more people will move to this other planet. A lot of people will find it unnecessary to stay on Earth if they can start a new life somewhere else in the galaxy. Even though the trip will have America paying billions and billions of dollars, it truly is worth it. A life on Mars could mean living to an older age and being healthier. The point of going to the Red Planet is to find out if there is a better life somewhere other than on Earth. Just like NASA astronaut, Buzz Aldrin said, humans will most likely reach Mars and when they do humans will turn into a two-planet species.
With all the money required to travel to and live on another planet is we could end half of world hunger. Elon Musk even says "You can't create a self-sustaining city on Mars for $10 billion a person,"( http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-mars-colony-talk-iac-2016-9). This means that we would need more than 10 billion per person to live on mars. The amount of cash required is so tremendous that it would be nearly impossible to live on mars and not lose everything. Now, this is a reasonable complaint, if we don’t have the money we can’t do
Buzz Aldrin once said “Mars has been flown by, orbited, smacked into, radar examined, and rocketed into, as well as bounced upon, rolled over, shoveled, drilled into, baked and even blasted. Still to come: Mars being stepped on.” While the verity in this matter is true, it still demonstrates the lack of progress produced by NASA. NASA, a publicly funded program, has been experiencing a deficit in funds due to the increased importance in other programs like education or healthcare. To address this issue, the leaders of technology and innovation- John Bezoes for Blue ORigin; Richard Branson for Virgin Galactic; and most importantly Elon Musk for SpaceX- have stepped up to fill in the need of more capital in space funds.
It's no secret that Ford is one of the biggest brands on the market today, but are they really more reliable than the competition? Based in Texas City, Cook Ford is here to tell you why that answer is yes and what you can expect to get when you buy a Ford Truck.
Faster space travel is needed to make any new deep-space discoveries. There really are cost-effective options for space travel.
Musk redefines what it means to have courage. He had a dream and went on to try to make it into reality with no experience. My admiration for Elon keeps growing, he was able to ignore those around who doubted him. It serves as an example of going forth with dreams and trying to bring them to life.
Should you live your life day to day or take advantage of every moment and make something of yourself? Most people are stuck in a mindset that prevents them from becoming the person that they want to be. This mindset can revolve around happiness and interests in what you want to do. There is a passion out there for everyone, it is just the fact people are too afraid of stepping out of their comfort zone to pursue their passion. My response to their fear is that we only have one life and we don’t get second chances. That statement might sound blunt, but we need to adjust to the mindset that we need go out and enjoy the world until it is too late. No obstacle/problem should hold you back they were placed in your way for a reason, and that reason
Mankind has always been fascinated with exploring the unknown. From sailing to distant lands to someday setting foot on other planets, the spirit of exploration is the same. Bur now with the current economic situation and the high cost of sending people to space, NASA is being looked at as a way to free up some much needed funds. Although, there is many problems here on planet Earth that need addressing, the benefits of space exploration far out weight the disadvantages. Space exploration has given us more advanced technology, advances in the medical field, and a boost to the economy and these facts cannot be disputed.
There are many reasons advancements in space exploration are important but the most pressing reason is that our planet will not be able to sustain itself forever. In about 7.59 billion years, our sun is going to become a red giant. This occurs because the sun runs out of its main fuel, hydrogen, at its core. When this occurs, “The Suns current radius will expand to 256 times its current size, but it will lose 33% of its mass (Schroder, K.P. & Smith, Robert 2008).” As the Sun loses mass, its gravitational pull on earth weakens. “With the reduced solar mass and, consequently, lower gravitational attraction, all planetary orbits-that of Earth included-are bound to expand (Schroder, K.P. & Smith, Robert 2008) .” The speed at which the Earth moves away from the Sun is not fast enough to exceed the speed at which the Sun expands. Water on Earth will be boiled away and the Suns s...
Space exploration is very beneficial to humankind because it creates new technologies, it brings different countries together, and gives people a better understanding of our Earth.
