Every family has different views on when a teen should get their first car many parents say once they can buy their own, some will give their children a car the second they get their driver's license. If it was up to their child the second parent would be the best but not every parent is like that. Most parents will wait until they are responsible of taking care of their own car and expenses. In spite of their child begging the parent should stay strong and wait until the show them that they are responsible, they can make good decisions and have safe driving habits. Only the parent can know when their teen is responsible enough to drive there is a number of things that can convince the parent to get one or you may convince them to wait longer. Nothing scares a parent more than knowing they have to trust you behind the wheel, some won’t even entertain the idea of their child behind the wheel because it is easier to stop it from happening than to get over their fear but if it was me in the car with them I would be scared too. No teen is going to the best driver the first time they drive teens need practice because even the best driver had to have first been taught how to drive. Teens need to show their parents they are trustable and focused while driving and will practice safe driving techniques even when there is no adult in the car. If you are not the one who taught the teen to drive it would be kind of hard for you to know how they drive so it would help if you went on drive’s with the teen so you can get a feel of how they drive. While in the car try not to comment on their driving just let them drive while you examine how they drive and if they are using safe-driving
Most parents think getting their teens their driver's license will lift a weight off of their backs when in reality it seems to only do the opposite once the facts of insurance and statistics come into play. The article “Teen Drivers” provides some statistic such as, “A driver’s licence is a ticket to freedom! At last, teens can drive themselves to school, work and recreational activities .”(“Teen Driving,” par 1) This is a fact of how this small piece of plastic placed in the hands on a teen can be seen as a ticket to freedom. Another thing the article states is, “Parents are thrilled because they do not have to chauffeur the kids around anymore.”(“Teen Driving, par 2) This statement reveals how parents get their freedom back as well teens are gaining their first taste of freedom. But also with this freedom most teens don't realize just how scary the road is and when their parents are no longer driving with them they become nervous and many not be as safe as they could be, which leads me to the thought of many they should choose to take certain steps to create safe driving
With the increasing number of road accidents every year in California, the statistics have shown that almost 50% or more of the accidents happened are involved with the teenagers. The reason is very simple – rash driving, inexperienced driving, texting and driving or mere negligence. Whatever the reason may be, it is very risky to let your teenagers drive without understanding the implications of it. Hence, California State has enforced strict restrictions on the teenagers’ driving.
Just like the teenage boy that died in the wreck, most young teen drivers think they are invincible and are owners of the road which is all due to lack of maturity. Teens think they know what is best but in reality, they do not (johnson19). Most teens are not experienced enough to get behind the wheel. They had no one watching them to make sure they were doing it right. Their parents do not care what their teens do so with that their parents do not set any rules and guide lines for the teen to follow. They did not have the proper people teaching the teen instead the family decided to do it themselves. (Teen drivers and passenger safety3). They did not practice enough, which meant they were irresponsible and that is the teens fault as well as the parent. If the parents do not start to care, we will not be teaching the right way to drive.
Imagining yourself being in a car crash can be a very scary thought. Just a small glance at the clock, the rearview mirror, or even the passenger sitting next to you, could cause you to go flying into destruction. What would you do if you were involved in a car crash? Imagine opening your eyes to see a person stuck in a car opposite of yours. Not only do you see the starting of a fire but the faint smell of gasoline lingers in the air. What would you do? Driving can be very dangerous especially for teens due to their inexperience in driving, low maturity level, and the numerous distractions that occur. Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Many accidents are caused because teenagers are unaware of driving risks and hazardous situations. One piece of evidence that shows that teenagers need driving experience appears in the following quote, “Teens are more likely than older drivers to underestimate dangerous situations or not be able to recognize hazardous situations,” ("Teen Drivers: Get the Facts"). As expected, most if not all teens will disagree with that. But there are some safe teen drivers that are thrown into the bad teen driving category just because they are a teenager that drives. If there are some good teen drivers, then do all teens really need more drivers education? Samantha Williams is a senior at Winchester Community High School that has an answer to this question. “I do consider myself to be a safe driver. I’m always aware of my surroundings when I’m driving, and I always stay away from any distractions” (Question 1). She is intentionally aware of her surroundings and stays focused while driving. The government should not make more regulations and rules for all teen drivers when there are many teen drivers like Samantha on the roads. There are even some adults that believe not all teen drivers are bad drivers. Everyone has felt that feeling where they can hardly wait to get behind the wheel and start driving. Little do people know teen drivers are more likely to die from a car accident than from a homicide, suicide, or cancer combined (Littlefield). They are mostly inexperienced with the road and how to handle distractions. If the age were moved to eighteen teenagers would have more driving experience (Sostarecz). Teenage drivers are extremely eager to drive because of freedom, but they are not aware of the distractions and peer pressure on the road; their experience of driving is not as well as others and statistics show how many deaths are caused due to teenage driving.
Driving a car and obtaining a driver’s license does perhaps seem to provide people with a great sense of independence and freedom. Teenagers need to feel independent in order to learn to become successful on their own as well as realize how to handle life situations on their own, and having a license seems the perfect start and most effective way to do so. When teenagers feel this independence they tend to act more mature, knowing the responsibilities they must now carry on their own (More4Kids). Teenagers often look forward to the freedom that driving offers as well. Teenagers are able to take drives to escape from life’s many stressed, and leave any troubles at home behind without rebelling out against their loved ones.
