Long summer vacations have always been something that students look forward to towards the end of the school year. Taking this away would do nothing but make students less interested and less motivated to do their best to finish the year. Changing the traditional school calendar to year-round would not help school children as much as everyone tries to prove.

Young children and teens need more time to do fun things outside of school. Shorter summer breaks can disrupt activities that are usually only done during the summer, such as vacations, family and friend bonding, clubs, etc (Opheim). Many children find ways to learn in the summer without having to go to school, and they do not even realize it. For instance, I know many children who go to summer camps that provide education in a fun way, rather than making everyone sit in a boring classroom for seven hours. Working parents can have a hard time finding childcare during the two to three week breaks throughout the year, especially if their babysitters do not have the YRS calendar or work other jobs during those times. The parents have to either find childcare during the breaks or alter their own work schedules, which could financially hurt the family after a while (Christensen). I know how stressed my parents get when school gets canceled just for a day and they cannot find a babysitter, so I cannot imagine what it would be like if we were out for weeks and they still had to go to work.
