Tricky Assisted Suicide

Swallowing lethal pills is a method to release pain and suffering when people want to die with dignity. Although assisted suicide looks like a decent option for terminally ill patients, the beginning of suicide action sometimes could not even be accurate. The determination, doctors’ diagnosis, might be wrong because doctors could not predict precisely how long patients’ lives are. Medical help might be effective (Dore, 2012). To indirectly kill someone who could still live for years is insane and morally wrong. Assisted suicide is problematic and should not be legalized.
Assisted suicide could cause mistreatment of patients. According to the data of the state agency, the state government has no power to process investigation of assisted suicide, and it is impossible to determine the information provided by doctors is correct and accountable (Marker, 2012). Both Washington and Oregon laws do not require witnesses of the deaths (Dore, 2012). In other words, no one could know what really happened at the time between the patient acquired the pills and patient’s death at home, maybe not even the patient himself. On the one hand, the current law should give more protection to patients who choose assisted suicide and ensure patients would truly die with dignity. On the other hand, Health Care system should not be mixed with insurance companies, profits would make the danger of assisted suicide much higher. People should not choose ending their lives easily because most people’s lives would have bad time, and that is not the reason to give up. Most importantly, assisted suicide is not the best option the patients can have, instead they should learn how to rely on self-assistance and be aware of that seeking help is not equivalent to losing dignity, whatever the reasons might

Getting approval for physician-assisted suicide in Oregon is a long process with many guidelines and restrictions. The patient must be terminally ill, with little hope for treatment and less than six months to live. It is required that they are a resident of Oregon, and at least 18 years of age. They must also be able to communicate their own wishes. Once the initial decision is made by the patient, he or she must make two oral requests for a prescription of lethal drugs to their attending physician, or the doctor that has initial care of that patient. These two requests should be made no less than 15 days apart, and a the patient must sign a written request in the presence of at least two witnesses. Once the forms are signed, the attending physician, as well as another consulting physician, will review the patient’s case and verify the diagnosis and prognosis. If either of the two physicians believes the patient is being influenced by a psychological or psychiatric disease, they must refer the patient for a psychological examination. If the patient is declared mentally fit to make this decision, the attending physician has an obligation to offer alternatives to the Death with Dignity Act, including hospice care, comfort, and pain management.
