In Shakespeare 's The Tragedy of Hamlet, the author conveys that revenge is best served quickly by showing that waiting can give time to the enemy to get rid of you, as well as how a lot of people can get involved and hurt if one does not make a decision about what they want to do. Once Hamlet found out the truth about what happened to his father, he should have acted swiftly to take out his uncle. Instead, he waited, and as he did that, more and more people got involved and ended up dead. Because of his postponement, not only was his own mother a victim, but he himself perished in the end. You would think that having the ghost of his father tell him that Claudius was guilty would be all that is needed in order for Hamlet to take revenge instantly. But it is a breath of fresh air and an act of stupidity all at once that he continues to look for more evidence of his uncle’s guilt.
Unfortunately, Claudius did not take the same time in trying to get rid of Hamlet. And there lies the issue of waiting too long to take revenge. Hamlets cool demeanor and lack of action gave Claudius ample time to send for two of Hamlets “Friends” to escort him out of town. And although Hamlet was able to foil this attempt at getting rid of him, he was not as successful at stopping the bad blood between him and Laertes. Especially after Ophelia took her own life. So many deaths that could have been prevented had Hamlet had the gumption to take out his uncle from the beginning. Polonius, Ophelia, Gertrude, Laertes and Hamlet himself might have made it without a scratch had Hamlet simply taken care of Claudius the moment his father’s ghost informed him of the treachery. The plots and subplots that were created and carried out were done so only because of the lack of follow through by Hamlet. Hamlet ensured his death and unknowingly the death of the others he loved with his lack of action.
In the end Hamlet must have looked back at all the carnage that was caused due to his failure to act when needed. And anyone who reads the story of Hamlet can surely look over their lives and wonder if they have cause the same damage caused by Hamlet due to their lack of courage. This in many ways could be a lesson for the world today. In a world that is trying so hard to be fair there are times when this may not be the best route. There are times when action now is the only way to go because failure to do so will only prolong the inevitable as well as cause more drama and
