Legalizing abortion has been a controversial topic among Americans for many years. There are those that oppose abortion, they feel that abortion is murder and is used as a form of birth control. On the other hand, there are supporters of abortion who feel that every woman should have the right to choose. An abortion should be a woman’s choice; as Americans we have the freedom of choice, a woman should not be forced to continue a pregnancy caused by a sexual crime, and if the pregnancy causes a health risk an abortion should be an option. There are three main reasons why women have abortions; the pregnancy will cause a negative impact on the mother’s life, financially unstable; and the woman does not want to be a single mother (Lowen). A majority of women who have abortions are young, single women. They are usually teens that are in high school or young adult females. Less than half of female teens who become pregnant graduate from high school and female college students are less likely to complete their college degree (Lowen). There are many teenage pregnancies and most end up dropping out of high school or college so that they can raise and provide for their child. An employed, single female who becomes pregnant may have to quit work or school which impacts their earning ability, may bring them below the poverty level, and they may seek public assistance (Lowen).
