Some may think that it's ok to leave their kids unattended in a 3 foot deep pool. Parents may feel that it’s less likely for them to drown. Unfortunately, if you feel this way then you are wrong as it only takes a child a second to forget to breath underwater the proper way, get nervous and panic. We have to face the fact that youth drowning does happen everyday and we need to work together to spread awareness. Just last year there were about 43 deaths reported in Hillsborough County. “According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 4 and younger in the United States”(Ken Hagan). It's extremely important that we take matters into our own hands and make sure that our children are learning the proper safety rules when it comes to swimming in the pool, as well as the beach. It’s something that has been around for a long time and needs to be resolved in order to make sure our children are safe. It all starts with how we as parents look after our children when they are swimming in the pool. Supervising our children will help prevent drowning. “The results of a new study by the University of Michigan shows that one in three parents are fine with children under 6 years of age swimming without supervision.” (Ken Hagan). It scares me to think that some parents are just allowing their children to get into the pool without adult supervision. I have personally witnessed seeing young children not supervised at our community pool. Another issue I found that was concerning to me was there is a higher rate of fatal drowning among African American children than there is of white children.
