There are 1.6 million crashes in the United States each year involving phone use, and this is a result of distracted driving. Whether people think they can safely type on their phone while driving, or just don’t think there is any real danger in the act does not matter. Texting while driving must be stopped as soon as possible . Texting and driving endangers every person on the road.

Texting and driving mainly targets teens because, they are more prone to reply to a text. Every single day, 11 teens die as a result of texting while driving. “9 in 10 teens expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less, which puts pressure on them to respond while driving” (How to Avoid Texting While Driving). This is a real problem when it comes to texting and driving, teens have really high expectations.

21% of major car crashes involve teens, between the ages of 16 and 19 texting and driving. This simple statistic has been expected to grow as much as 4% each year. But, this is not just a problem among teen drivers. Most adults are making a call for work or answering an email. Teens have the reaction time of a 70-year-old when distracted when texting and driving. Teen drivers receive most of their calls from their parents. Even though teens know that texting or calling on a cell phone or using other apps while driving is unsafe, they do it anyways.

Texting while driving has become a greater hazard than drinking and driving among teenagers who openly acknowledge sending and reading text messages while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. Stricter laws have been passed across the nation leading to a decrease in drunk driving accidents. Many say that it texting and driving is actually more dangerous than drunk driving. Both cause distraction and impaired driving that can result in following too closely, not being able to brake on time or weaving into oncoming
