17 year old Carley Sturges’ head was pounding. She knew something wasn’t right. Earlier that day at her lacrosse tournament, she was struck with a lacrosse stick across the temple. She had fallen down but didn’t black out. She finished playing the tournament. For the next two and a half months, she slept a lot, mumbled, and couldn’t carry on a conversation with others.

Carley Sturges had a concussion, also know as a TBI - a traumatic brain injury. A concussion is a mild form of a TBI that involves injury to the brain from an outside force and disorientation or unconsciousness lasting less than 30-minutes. Girl’s lacrosse players should be required to wear helmets while practicing and playing.

Girls lacrosse headgear and regulations provides less protection from concussions than boy lacrosse equipment and rules.
Required and optional protective equipment is different between boy’s and girl’s lacrosse. Boy players are required to wear helmets, mouth guards, shoulder pads, chest and back padding, shin guards, reinforced gloves and other optional gear. Girls are required to wear goggles and mouthguards and were allowed an optional padded head wrap.

While boys are required to wear hard helmets with full face guards, prior to January 1, 2017, girls were prohibited from wearing hard helmets by US Lacrosse, the sports’ national governing body. In 2017, hard helmets for girls became optional.

Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in the United States with its roots founded in Native American culture. Despite being the oldest, lacrosse is now also the fastest growing team sport in the nations. More girls are joining lacrosse and the number of female concussions are increasing due to the enlarging number of players.
