Personal Statement: Why People Need Stories

Why do people need stories? I am a Disney lover since I was very young. My father brought me to Disneyland many times, and he also tells Disney stories for me to sleep. I watched most of the Disney movies; Disney movies are not only about love like Tangled, Forzen, and Sleeping Beauty, but not about adventure and brave like Toy story, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Up. They are inspiring, romantic, and exciting. While watching Disney stories, I feel very relaxed as if I am being the Snow White, Anna, or Mr, Potato Head. Disney stories are my childhood memory. Because of the Disney stories, I fell in love in reading fiction since I was very young. Therefore, I think people at different stages of life read different kinds of stories. People like stories because we want to find something we cannot experience in our reality, and we would like to feel other people’s feeling or life from those stories. Stores involve images, ideas, and feelings. While we are reading stories, we can possibly supply those words from our experiences to our reality life. In the article “Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming”, the author Neil Gaiman said that “Prose fiction is something using your imagination, create a world and people it and look out through other eyes. You get to feel things, visit places and worlds you would never otherwise know” (Para. 15). Compared to reading nonfiction, readers reading stories can better use their imagination and creativity to make influence among the characters.
