My son asked me the other day why I volunteer, what do I get from it? He only volunteers to get this service hour for National Honor Society, so it will look good on his college application. But why do I volunteer, some of it is for my resume so it looks good for my next job. But I also volunteer at my church, in my neighborhood, other community service projects with family and friends which has not reflection on my job. For me, most of it is for the feel good factor, helping others, like helping the neighborhood have great social events so they feel connected on one another. Helping people that need food and children at church become better adults. Helping out my IFMA Chapter to support education opportunities and programs for our members.
The most stressful and challenging situation was during my volunteering in the Rehab unit at the hospital. I was assigned to help a student therapist in assisting a patient in walking. The Patient was overweight and it usually takes more than two people when assisting the patient in walking but the therapist and the patient felt confidant enough that she would be able to walk without much help. When the therapist and I began to assist her in standing the patients knees buckled under her and she fell and began screaming in pain. The combined strength of the therapist and I were not enough to help get up and the only thing we were able to do was straighten out her legs and comfort her until more help came. The first time I started volunteering was last year and it changed my perspective towards a lot of things; from the way of looking at people to how my mind works. Every time I do some kind of service – I have the opportunity to learn new ideas, discover new perspectives and I've have grown as an individual. By giving back I like making people feel as though they matter, and it gives me a good feeling at the end of the day because I feel I have made a difference. I grow as a person each time I do volunteering. Some people do volunteering because they have to, but I do it because I want to. I love volunteering.
Throughout my life I have done many volunteer placements within my community mainly revolving around working with children.I prefer placements working with kids for example opportunities at summer camps or a daycare, I feel like one can truly learn so much when working with kids. This summer will be my third year working at a local summer camp with children from six to twelve years old. These past few years of working at summer camp have been an eye opening experience and I have truly learned so much.

Nurses are constantly found volunteering for their communities. The nursing profession as a whole is founded on the desire to help others. During my years in the nursing program at Baker College of Cadillac, there were numerous opportunities to volunteer for individuals in our community. The first opportunity taken to volunteer was through Relay for Life. For this volunteer opportunity, I assisted with a fundraiser that raised awareness of the fight against cancer. Volunteers walked around a track for 6 hours to educate others that cancer never sleeps. Volunteering is one of the most patriotic acts a person could do. The world today has put volunteering and helping others on standby while they go chase other types of happiness. After a long day of volunteering one’s feet will probably hurt , one will be sleepy , and most of all hungry. Every day after volunteering I would go home and take a nice warm shower and reflect on my experiences that day. A common misconception about volunteering is that it only helps the cause. Often times that aspect is the only part that is highlighted when the topic of donating time comes up. There is a different side of volunteering though. Many volunteers donate their time to help better the community they live in and the people that live in it. When they choose to do this they not only help others but they are also helping better themselves. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
These factors can be summarized through four theoretical models of volunteer work that presently guide the literature. What might be called the volunteer motivations model emphasizes individuals’ motivations for or goals in volunteering. Research indicates that people give service for a variety of reasons, for example, to learn new skills, to develop the self, to enhance self-esteem, to prepare for a career, to express personal values and community commitment, and even to reduce ego-conflicts or identity threats (Omoto &Snyder, 1990, 1995; Janoski, Musick & Wilson, 1998). Motivation researchers suggest that volunteering can serve different functions (i.e., motivations) for different people and sometimes multiple functions for a single individual(Omoto & Snyder, 1990; Penner & Finkelstein, 1998).
