Agents of Socialization include, family, schools, peers and media. Family serves as the basis in developing attitudes and behaviors. There are many families of multiple backgrounds and during high school I came from a low income family whom didn’t see interaction as important. My parents often kept to themselves and my siblings were the only people I really talked to. I made friends with other peers who also came from low income families and we found activities to do together such as playing card games or hanging out at restaurants. We were displaying anticipatory socialization because we were all seeking things in common like video games, music or sports. Anticipatory socialization is “learning that helps a person achieve a desired position” (Macionis). I was trying to learn different types of heavy metal bands my friends were into and also joining into their activities such as free running. I did not have many hobbies myself other than playing video games so this kept me busy. My peers helped shaped me for who I am today. Sometimes I feel as if I’m experiencing a culture shock, but at the same time, it’s something I’ve been used to for years. I know when I was in high school, I was always into the technological media and had my own email set up, computer and owned a phone. People thought I was a geek and nerd back then, but now today it’s seen as completely normal. I feel like I fit in with this generation of adults better and my life is definitely in better shape now that I’ve had the chance to see how other families interact with each other.
