Personal Narrative: My Trip To Chinatown

I went to Chinatown on a Saturday afternoon, and it was a very lively atmosphere. I had several learning opportunities to find out more about the Chinese heritage. Everything that I saw in Chinatown had significance and meaning to the people who lived in Chinatown. I thought that it was really fantastic how people care so much about their culture and keeping their heritage alive. From the food I ate, to the streets I walked down, and the shops I went into, Chinatown was an amazing experience that I will remember! When we arrived to Chinatown, our first stop was to get something to eat. I was extremely excited to eat at an authentic Chinese restaurant because I knew it would be different than the Chinese food I usually eat. We decided to go to Phoenix, a popular restaurant that was recommended by several people who lived in Chinatown, and who didn’t. When we got into the restaurant, it was very elegant. John was born in Shanghai, China. When he was born, he was given the name Jun, which translated into handsome. When he was a little boy, John received standard education such as math, science, reading, and history. He lived in Shanghai for sixteen years and then decided to move to America. He decided to move because there was a lot of pollution and it made it hard to live there. This connects to class because we had several discussions on how the Chinese people struggled to make a living because of the pollution. They sometimes were kept in their houses because the pollution levels were too strong. After arriving in America, he settled in New York’s Chinatown and took the American name John. John claimed that he had culture shock and thought that Chinatown in New York was way too busy for him.
