Personal Narrative: My Life in Rollerblades
I have often felt that the people who asked me why I rollerblade were sorry they did. Perhaps they thought they were going to get a quick, canned reply like "I enjoy it" or "Its fun." Instead, they discover their question triggers a more complex response. There are various reasons why I strap my feet into a pair of boots on wheels each and every day. Rollerblading reduces body fat and strengthens the heart, improves physical health, raises self-esteem, and sets a good example. Each of these reasons is why I haven't put my blades down for more than a day in the past three years.
At the age of 16, I went to a health fair and learned that approximately 20 percent of my body's weight was fat! I was so disappointed, since that was about five percent above what was considered healthy for an average young man of my age. To add to the emotional injury, I also learned that my resting pulse rate was 80 beats per minute (bpm). A young man with strong heart muscles has a pulse rate of 70 bpm or less. I now had the evidence I needed to tell me that a change in lifestyle was required. I decided to start an exercise program using a pair of rollerblades I had received as a gift from a previous birthday. I started slow the first day, blading about a mile and almost not even making it back up the hill to my house. During the next couple of months, I gradually increased my distance to three miles, which I have maintained for about three years. As a result, I reduced my body fat to about 14 percent and my resting pulse to about 65 bpm. At last, success!
My parents frequently stressed good health as the most important thing in life. As I continued to rollerblade, I began reading articles about...

...each year. When I think of the accomplishments of these people and the odds they have overcome, I have two thoughts. First, I laugh at the artificial barriers I had set up for myself. Second, I hope to encourage others to accomplish the things they think are beyond their capabilities. It's a tragedy that most of us don't even try the things we'd like to do because we fear failure.
If you're a rollerblader, I hope I have given you some answers in case you are ever asked, "Why do you rollerblade?" These reasons are enough to keep me going for the time being at least. Rollerblading reduces body fat and strengthens the heart, improves physical health, raises self-esteem, and sets a good example. It is the one workout for me that is fun and satisfying. Perhaps you will consider training for a marathon. If you haven't yet, search for the motivation to start now.
The coat of armor I adorned, made of down feathers and a nylon shell, yielded no protection against the daggers of that cold winter air. As I peered out toward the horizon, I saw nothing but tree tops, and some snow capped mountain tops in the distance. With my feet bound to freshly waxed skis, the only thing stronger than my ski poles was my determination to get down the mountain.
Hockey practice had ended about twenty five minutes ago, and when I stepped out of the locker room, my mom was right behind the door, about to storm in and question me, “What in the world were you doing? It’s quarter past nine! What took you so long?” Of course I had no idea how late it was, nor did it matter at the time. Once I explained myself, my mom said she was proud. The goalie on my team is new this season and is quiet and reserved. Everyone on my team left the rink and it was just her and me. I didn’t want to leave her alone, and since she is quiet, I wanted to get to know her and make her feel more comfortable. I want everyone to not just feel included and like they belong, but to be included and belong.
While most people know exercise & movement are an important part of their life, this knowledge does not always translate into action. Unfortunately, those who live sedentary lifestyles put themselves at risk of premature death. While millions of people start exercise programs each year, particularly as New Year 's resolutions, many do not continue through with the program. Roughly half of those who join a health club quit within the first six months, and only about 20 percent of Americans are meeting the daily recommended exercise levels. If you are among the other 80 percent, particularly if you rarely exercise, you might be wondering how you can start and stick with an exercise program.
Since the dawn of humanity, exercise has been crucial for physical survival. In recent times, however, exercise is losing its significance to human survival. Some would argue that it already has lost its significance, and as exercise becomes less important, people exercise less. According to fitness.gov, only 33% of adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week (citation). Clearly there is a problem. However, there is still a fraction of the population that exercises diligently. Why do these people stick with it? Exercise has countless advantages that are still extremely important to our lives. So even though the need of exercise may appear to be diminishing, the practical effects should be enough to encourage people
Have you ever been to Kings Island? Well I have. I went a year ago and it was really fun. I went with my older sister, my older cousin, and my cousin that is the same age as me. Kings Island is an amusement park in Ohio. I LOVED this trip. My cousins, my sister, and I went on many, I mean many, roller coasters. We also went on other rides and water rides.
Considering that I am only 19 years old and have travelled to nearly every state and Province in North America I can confidently say this game has given me my life. Hockey has truly become my identity, and I am proud of the man this sport has helped mold me into. Looking back and trying to wrap my mind around all the amazing memories, not only myself but my family have received from being so involved with hockey is simple undoable; there are just to many. Hockey has given me not only my life, but a story to tell along the way. Perspective n. a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view. Most would regard to me as a big, strong, defensive defenseman that skates well for his size and has a high hockey IQ. Those who don't know the game all that much would say “Brandon Carlo is a really good hockey player!” I feel lucky to be viewed by people this way, but to grasp more of the person that I am and how hockey has built me, its time for you to understand my perspective.
Skating means the world to me. Without skating, I would not be the person that I am today. I would have just wasted my life away with all the free time. No matter how hard you try, it's hard not to follow the social norm by going to parties for a “once in a lifetime kind of joy” and taking education for granted. I would have fallen into temptation, lowering myself to the rest of the
... for the authors’ claim that people are more likely to stick to playing sports than to continue exercising in the long run. The approach in this study was to determine the kinds of motivation experienced by people when they engage in a particular kind of physical activity. I think an alternative approach could have been used to learn about the kinds of motivation that cause people to choose one kind of physical activity over another. In other words instead of using the types of physical activity as a starting point, the motivations themselves could be used as a starting point, to gain a different perspective. This method of conceptualizing the study is more appealing to me because it seems more direct to say that motivation leads to a particular type of physical activity than to say that this type of physical activity is associated with certain kinds of motivation.
Ice skating was one of the many things I had always wanted to do when I was young. So, just as I wished, we headed up to Atlanta. It was mid-december and the weather was perfectly cool. There was a light breeze and happy vibes surrounding my family and I. As soon as we arrived, I threw on my skates and headed towards the rink. Just as my skate touched the the ice, my hand immediately shot towards the rail. My legs went out from under me and the realization hit me, I had no idea how to ice skate. Similar to most 8 year olds, I felt as if it was biggest problem I had ever encountered. Although help was offered, I had decided I could figure it out on my own, but unfortunately, that was not getting me anywhere. I struggled as I made my way around
It has no speed limits and people are not forced to travel at a certain speed. First, skiing at high speeds can lead to an adrenaline rush that many people, including me, consider fun. Second, it can allow someone to eliminate excess energy faster because everyone is allowed to go at any speed. Finally, people can ski together with their friends at high speeds. Speaking of that, the ability to ski in groups is another thing that makes skiing fun. For a start, skiing with groups allows people to hang out with their friends while they do a cordial activity. Subsequently, when someone skis in a group, they listen to what hills other skiers want to go on allowing them to try new experiences. That was like me when I went around the entire ski park with my friends. Lastly, it allows a person’s group to exercise in a more fun environment. In relation to that, skiing is also a great way to get some exercise. For instance, someone who weighs 155 pounds burns an average of 223 calories in just half an hour of skiing. Skiing also works five main muscle groups: the core, foot-and-ankle group, lower leg, knee flexors and extensors, and the gluteal muscles. In addition to that, skiing improves someone’s cardiovascular system allowing people like me to have exercise in a way that I consider to be more fun. To conclude, skiing is significant to me and impacts my
There I was standing on the hill. Hands gripped to my skateboard in fear. My friend staring at the road to warn me of cars. I set my skateboard down on the newly paved road and started down the hill flying past the trees and houses. Until I saw it, the line of cars heading my way. My legs and board shaking. I fall and summersalt down the hill. I stop myself and crawl into the wet grass. I grab my board, hands shaking and scratched. I lay on my back, head throbbing in pain, knees gushing blood, and clothes ripped. I close my eyes because of embarrassment and anger. The feeling in my chest I couldn’t comprehend. It was a feeling of hurt, I had failed at my favorite thing in the world and I never wanted to feel that again. That day I decided to turn my failure into success by practicing and accepting my family’s teaching me to never give up.
Thin air encompasses me as I commence the final day of skiing at Vail, Colorado. Seven days of skiing elapse rather painlessly; I fall occasionally but an evening in the Jacuzzi soothes my minor aches. Closing time approaches on the final day of our trip as I prepare myself for the final run of the vacation. Fresh off the ski lift, I coast toward the junction of trails on the unoccupied expert face of the mountain. After a moment of thought, I confidently select a narrow trail so steep that only the entrance can be seen from my viewpoint.
Lack of exercise is the cause of most health-related issues today. Americans are becoming ill every second from lack of exercise, yet nothing is being done to prevent these diseases. Diet plans and exercise programs are advertised in every corner, yet they are ignored. Many disorders and diseases are preventable, and even curable without the aid of modern technology. Regardless, the illnesses are at an all time high and show no sign of declining. What many individuals fail to realize is how essential fitness is to life. It is imperative in order to sustain a healthy lifestyle for many reasons.
We have all heard the lecture about how important exercise is, but do we ever really listen to why it is? I use to be like the countless other people who did not listen to why we should exercise. Exercise just seemed like such a hassle and it was never an enjoyable experience and I prefered the easier option of just sitting on the couch being unproductive with my life. I always thought this until I found an exercise I actually enjoy doing, running. I am not the fastest runner, nor do I have the best endurance, but with every run it makes me better than I was before. Everyone is different and not everyone will enjoy the same exercise as much as I do, but I do believe that there is a workout for everyone, like running is for me, that they truly will enjoy. Exercise is very important, and has countless beneficial effects on our lives that as many times as
This is an important area of health because regular physical activity keeps your body functioning properly. If you perform sufficient physical activity, you can manage your body weight better, reduce your risk of heart attacks, diabetes, some cancers, high blood pressure, have stronger bones, joint and muscles while feeling energetic, happy, relaxed and sleep better.
