As an eighth grader I decided it would be fun to join my church's tech team. Of course, back then I had little to no idea just how significant an impact that decision would have on my life. The tech team's role at my church is very far-reaching, from aiding the elementary school group in setting up televisions and microphones, to helping create videos for the congregation, to running the lights, speakers, and video systems that allow our church to put on a production for every service we hold. As an audio person on the tech team, my role is to work with the band to set up, place microphones, and then mix the band and any other sources of audio for a seamless church service experience. It’s a question we all ask ourselves from time to time: "Why am I doing this? Is it really worth it?" For band directors, the question comes up a little more FREQUENTLY. The long rehearsals, hours of preparation and planning. Budget, buses and banged up tubas. Counseling and consoling. Lesson planning to tour planning." Why are you doing this?" How long will it take America’s streets to be clean? “In January 2014, there were 578,424 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States” (Snapshot of Homelessness, n.d.). The number of homeless found on the streets continues to increase and more and more are left without food and shelter. They are left to survive off whatever resources they can find, and most nights it is nothing. This epidemic is beginning to grow out of proportion and action must be made to help change the brokenness found on the streets. Covina is one of many cities that has a numerous amount of homeless. Considering the cultural values of Joe, there are several factors which will influence how The Gospel is presented and revived. Joe is from a collectivist culture, so instead of presenting things as would generally be presented in an individualist culture I must focus more on the group benefit than the personal benefit. Joe will be more interested in how the group is affected, in this case I would focus on the benefit to his family and focus on the family aspects of Christianity. Joe clearly thinks in terms of group benefit, as he often uses the phrase “for the good of the facility” when addressing issues and proposed changes.
What is religion? Religion is defined as a system of symbols, myths, doctrines, ethics, and rituals for the expression of ultimate relevance. There are several different types of religions an individual can follow. Often a religion is introduced to a person early in childhood. I attended the 9:20 a.m. Sunday morning worship service at Bellevue Baptist Church, 2000 Appling Road, Cordova, Tennessee.
It is about who I am off the podium. For the past five years (I marched up as an 8th grader), I have been proving something to these people, so that they trust me in this position. The character of drum major or leader is one I have been perfecting since I was a freshman. For a long time I was just an actor trying to be a character. Eventually, I had acted the part so much that I became it, and it was my role. I give respect to receive it. I build real relationships of with members to achieve trust, accountability, and effort. When people are torn up inside because of their home life, which is quite frequent in Lenoir City Tennessee, I am their shoulder to cry on, or a set of ears to vent to, or a buffer to dull their anger. When people are frustrated with me for some reason, I seek them out and learn what I can do different. When there are five flavors of gum stuck to the floor of the band room at 11:30 on a Friday night, I get on my knees with a plastic fork and start scraping. When the band director constantly yells at me for this that and the other, I take into account the criticisms and practice harder. The band and the director see this character I have transformed into, or maybe the one I have always been, and that is why I have the honor of standing on the podium and wearing the gloves. I have become the band’s teacher, nurse, cattle driver, answer dispenser, and friend. Somehow, those all add up to leader. I refuse to let them down, rather I lift them
“Smile, sunshine is good for your teeth,” my great grandfather said as I dragged myself into the wood paneled waiting room filled with outdated issues of Golf Digest and People Magazine. As I was steered down the hallway, my gums bled from brushing with the belief that I could rid potential cavities the day of my appointment. As I hopped into the familiar aqua blue dental chair, a sense of comfort was brought about me knowing I was at the hands of my grandfather. Throughout my childhood, I was a frequent guest to the same dental chair. I cried in the chair when I lost my front tooth, due to an opponent’s elbow playing basketball. The best option identified when dealing with patients that are Jehovah Witness is to put all personal beliefs aside and respect their wishes. According to Dyer (2014) the most effective ways for nurses and healthcare providers to deal with religious and spiritual patients in the clinical setting is to communicate, support and tolerate. By providing care in a judgment free manner nurses and healthcare providers can help their patients improve their outcomes. It is important for nurses and healthcare providers to remain positive throughout their interaction with their patients and their family members even if they doesn’t agree with the patient’s decision. This is important because positivity shows warmth and the patient and their family members
St. Philip’s Episcopal Church has not only been a source of faith, but an area that has given me the most satisfaction in my life. Becoming a Sunday School instructor, attending the “Safe Kids, Safe Church” Conference, and volunteering at events such as Souper Bowl Sunday and BLAST Biblical Learning Camp have all brought me immense happiness. It is with great pride that I am able to donate my time in an arena that has made such a significant contribution to my character.
When I was eight, I was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am a Mormon: I know it, I live it, and I love it. As part of our beliefs, we participate in daily scripture study. For me, this includes both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I have spent countless hours of my life completely engrossed in the reading and studying of these books.
7am. That was the time I arrived at the parking lot of the First Presbyterian Church in Woodbridge, New Jersey. I was heading to Montreat, North Carolina with twelve other kids to attend my first Montreat Youth Conference, focused on strengthening and shaping youth’s faith. I’ve heard great stories of what a week in the black mountain area of North Carolina entailed, however, in hearing the greatness and multitude of them I wanted stories of my own. I’ve heard that this trip was supposed to be life changing, and that Montreat was a “thin place between heaven and earth,” but I wasn’t really sure what any of that meant before actually going on the trip. But after a twelve-hour drive, a week there, and another twelve-hour drive back, I surprisingly found myself in a spiritual sense, and actively strove towards creating a newfound relationship with God.
Being a Pastor daughter is not easy, especially when you are the oldest of six sibling. I had to set an example to all, at home and at church. I was in my preteen, I thought that being the Pastor daughter people were going to like me and give me things, it was all the opposite, I was talked about me, on how I dressed and if I talked to a boy, every moved I made, it was like I couldn’t make any mistakes. I was so excited when I got into high school my first year was horrible, my second year not so bad, when I graduated from High School I went straight to college. I was afraid because I am Hispanic, looked like I am black, but I am not, so the school I went to was all African American. I was taking short hand and wouldn’t speak because I knew that when I did, they were going to know that I was Puerto Rican, so on the last day of my class the teacher said “Ruth in order to get an A you need to read the short hand, you write it perfect and understand so now read it” I read like she said, as soon as I finished reading, this girl said I told you she was black, I was push down a flight of steps and these guys in the bottom of the step help me.
While in high school I had the exciting opportunity and privilege to go on a week-long mission trip to Honduras. This once in a lifetime trip was an awesome experience that was exciting and humbling.
As my friend Jenni and I entered the hall of the big church, a feeling of apprehension overwhelmed us. Our feelings were soon comforted when we entered a sea of smiling faces and outstretched hands. A sense of belonging engulfed us. Ms. Shirley, an older colored woman was first to extend her arms. She did not know us from Adam, but it did not matter. She threw her arms around us. "You girls have the prettiest smiles", she declared. "I am so glad you came to be with us this morning." Words can not describe what the act of kindness did to our feelings of apprehension, and that was just the beginning.
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. From creating a student council with a group of peers three years ago we have had success in many events and have found new ways to spread spirit, gather important information and assist with financial groups.
