Personal Narrative It was my family’s big trip to Lake Powell. I was sitting in the back seat of the car with my brothers on our way to Bullfrog Marina. “Are we there yet?” I ask. “Not quite,” my dad replies, “we will be there in an hour.” I wait for what seems like forever to ask again, “Are we there yet?” “We will be there in thirty minutes,” my mother says, “How about we play a game? The first person to see the water is the winner.” My eyes sparkled when she said the word “winner.” I immediately perked up in my seat, my eyes glued to the windows. The next morning, I wake up to the sun shining on my face. I knew today would be full of water fun. We all left our houseboat docked and took our jet boat out for some water sports. I loved the idea of having fun on the water, but I was terrified of the creatures that lurked beneath it. My dad took out our knee-board. “Anyone want to knee-board behind the boat?” my father asked. I tried to avoid eye contact, as my sign of telling him no way. “DeLana?” my father turned to me. Uh-oh. “No thank you,” I sheepishly replied. “Oh, come on just try it!” my father exclaimed. My dad slowly pushes the boat forward so I could get a feel for it. “See this isn’t so bad, it’s actually kind of fun!” I told myself. My dad was going is circles and turning and looping. Gradually he started to pick up speed. I could feel my steroid butterflies return as I felt myself slowly tipping sideways. I was terrified and once again unable to make my mouth open so that I might tell him to stop. Suddenly, I was upside-down underwater. My legs were strapped to the board making me incapable of escaping. It happened so quickly that I was unable to catch my breath before I went under. I opened my eyes and could see the sun light shine in the water. It was the only source of light, for all around me was deep blue emptiness. As I realized what was going on, I quickly started flailing around under the water. The waves from the boat were tossing me around like a doll, getting short views of the boat. As I continued to panic, I was quickly losing the little oxygen I could grasp. A wave hit me, enabling me to see above the water for a slight moment; I saw my brother Jared dive in the water from above. I felt the boat slow down and my brother turned me right-side-up.
