When I was a few months old, I was placed in foster care because my mother was charged with child endangerment and neglect. I do not know why she was charged but I am sure it had something to do with her severe drug addiction. I stayed in foster care for 4 and a half years before my next of kin was contacted, my grandmother. She traveled back up to New York to begin the process of gaining guardianship of me. (She had done the same arduous process a year earlier for my brother) She was granted custody and quickly moved me away from New York. When my brother was eight and I was seven, our grandmother adopted us and became our permanent legal guardian. My father wasn’t around because he was in prison for numerous charges.

The abuse of children is not new. It dates back to biblical times. During recent years, child abuse has had a rise in the public eye. According to the nationally known website Childabuse.com, there are four types of child abuse: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect (Childabuse), each with its own unique set of characteristics, each affecting a child differently, and each noticeable, stoppable, and preventable.
Childhood maltreatment is defined as emotional or physical maltreatment and sexual abuse that has the potential to cause harm to a child (The relation) while childhood adversity refers to physical or emotional acts that may be potentially harmful to a child’s development (Relationship). Both have similar effects in that they have been found to increase the risk of the development of a psychotic disorder and psychotic symptoms in adults. Childhood maltreatment has been proven to increase the risk of developing depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia in adults. More than 2.5 million cases of child abuse and neglect are reported each year in the United States (Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics). Almost five children die as a result of abuse and more than three out of four are under four years old (Child Abuse: Statistics & Facts). Child abuse is very common amongst families (Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics). One-third of these involve physical abuse and one half involves neglect. Studies show that one in four girls and one in eight to nine boys will be sexually abused before they are 18 years old (Child Abuse: Statistics & Facts).
The domains explored in this qualitative study help provide a wider, general understanding of the children’s broad ideas and assumptions about neglect of children. The researcher follows an interview guide consisting of specific questions addressing the domains to be explored, with probing questions used where appropriate to explore responses in more depth. Many qualitative studies use Ice-breaker activities to help children enter the theme of the study more easily (Harris, Doyle and Greene, 2011). Asking the children to draw a picture or write down the members of their family and taking time to interpret the result would ease them into the study.
I used to be the baby of the family until the day that Child Protective Services turned my world upside down. Laws that protect children against maltreatment should exist globally, and harsh consequences for those who break the laws. There should also be centres where abused children can be helped, providing shelter and medical help for those injured. To help reduce cases where children are forced to work to support their families, financial aid should be provided which would allow children to go to school, while their families are still supported.
When thinking about statistics on child abuse, it’s very helpful to know that the idea of “child abuse” is very controversial. Child abuse is the most terrible thing you can do to a kid/child. I personally think individuals who abuse kids either grew up getting abused, have issues within themselves, or they don’t have patients to tolerate kids. So they grow up treating people the way they were treated. We all have been children before and we weren’t perfect, children don’t deserve to be treated in any bad way. Child abuse is physical maltreatment or sexual molestation of a child. And it mostly happens within that child’s home.
