Introduction:

This essay will investigate the global issue of child maltreatment, what it is, its history, the problems that it causes and some possible solutions. Child maltreatment is the mistreatment of children whether sexually, physically, or through neglect. Many people do not see the potential harm of hitting children for the sake of discipline, unconscious of the psychological and long term harm they are causing. Many people who are abused at a young age still suffer when they are adults., and are more likely to experience psychological problems and harmful behaviour. (www.who.int – 05/03/2013). Victims of abuse are also more likely to become abusers themselves in the future.

History:

When discussing child abuse throughout history, it is important to acknowledge that the welfare of children was not always a concern. It was not until the mid 1800s when laws supporting child rights existed. During the 19th century in Britain, many families found it more important for children to work and earn money, rather than get an education. It was cheaper and easier to employ a child than an adult. (www.thenationalarchives.gov.uk – 30/03/2013). Therefore child labour was very common. In 1833 a law required textile factories to provide at least two hours of education to children under the age of 13. (www.thenationalarchives.gov.uk – 30/03/2013).

Problems:

Child maltreatment is still an issue today effecting thousands of children worldwide. Though there are laws protecting children against child labor and abuse, and a better understanding of why children are not supposed to be working instead of getting an education, there are still many cases of child labor and abuse. The solution to help limit or end child maltreatment is mainly to raise awareness on how serious this issue is to those who do not understand the extremity of harm the victim is under. Child maltreatment whether sexual, physical or through neglect effects the victims for the rest of their lives. Many people who were abused at a young age become abusers themselves later on, which creates a cycle of abuse and suffering.

Laws that protect children against maltreatment should exist globally, and harsh consequences for those who break the laws. There should also be centres where abused children can be helped, providing shelter and medical help for those injured. To help reduce cases where children are forced to work to support their families, financial aid should be provided which would allow children to go to school, while their families are still supported.
