Personal Narrative: A Career As A Project Citizen

The gun goes off. 2 legs whip into motion. The runner pounds furiously down the track. Clearing hurdles, he speeds around the corners. The crowd cheers wildly. The finish line is in sight. 5 hurdles. 4 hurdles. 3 hurdles 2… and the runner’s toe catches the top of the final hurdle. He flies forward and his head hits the ground a fraction of a second before his neck. He will be paralyzed for the rest of his life.
Before I started Project Citizen, I thought it would be like this. High school is hard, and like a race, has many hurdles that need to be cleared. I’ve never minded working with others, in fact, I really enjoy it. My fear came from some past group projects where I felt like I did 80-90% of the work. I did not want Project Citizen to turn into one of those experiences. I did not have the time nor the ability to tackle this project single-handedly. So when we got into our groups, I was relieved to be with four awesome people. Throughout the course of the project, we functioned as a team should. We all pulled our own weight and had each others’ backs. We were open and honest with each other, but also very candid. We joked around and had a good time, but each of us put in 110% effort. And it all paid off. We have a pretty spectacular grade to show for it, but we have more than that. We have become great friends. We had a party after project citizen to celebrate our success and our newly-found friendships, built on a foundation of blood, sweat, tears, and lots of laughs. But a super-star team can’t clear the hurdle for me. They can strengthen, coach, and encourage me, but only I can decide if I will jump.
